If you don't expose and challenge assumptions, then the box remains invisible. You can't think outside a box you don't see. Premature success has an opportunity cost. You will accrue learning debt in the long run.

Instead, frame it in light of the simple fact that, in the real world, good work does not speak for itself. You must speak for it yourself if your team is to get the recognition they deserve.

The resulting performance one stratum puts on for another can be called the “public” transcript. Subordinates will typically only go off script while offstage.

Executives only contradict this narrative with each other. This manifests what has been called the “hidden transcript”.
