I wanted to promote a great journal for science for kids.
Frontier for Young Minds aims to engage school pupils in the science review activity. Practicing scientists/experts can write (or re-write) their latest research, accessible for kids. This is then reviewed by school children to check you’ve mastered it!

See our Climate Collection here – based around latest IPCC FAQs

We can’t adapt our way out of climate change – needed, but not sufficient. Without mitigation, adaptation will hit limits.

Likewise we can’t just buy our way out of responsibility by compensating for damage. Again – necessary but not sufficient. We really must stop making the damage worse

It all feels toothless without action on emissions – a bit like agreeing accident damages with a victim while you’re still hitting them on the head with a hammer. “Don’t worry we’ll use a smaller hammer”

Reflections on COP27 – still undecided how disappointed I am – interested in thoughts

The mitigation side was a disaster, but loss and damage is a big step forward. Not my expertise, but this is maybe worth more than I thought? It’s definitely a conceptual leap – but only time will tell how seriously the pledges to it are kept

we know …

I’ve been working with some of the kids here for a year or so – it is so energising to see the enthusiasm for the environment and the hope for the future. It’s why we do the job – we want a world our kids can inherit without them resenting what we did to it

Huge thanks to the school for all the support. Mrs Whalley is a fab head 😊 who enables so much positive action in the school. Great support from Fiona, Alison and many others too.

Our climate is changing _now_ - it’s not just an issue for future generations or people far away – it is affecting everyone, everywhere, right now. These stripes use local climate data – specific to Exminster. Our stripes are a unique fingerprint!

Also important to note the discussion is not binary – there are lots of different aspects of o/s. Particularly the magnitude and duration are really important considerations. It’s not just o/s or not. Higher and longer overshoot increase challenges in both impacts and recovery

IPCC SR15 mainly explored the former – due to it’s focus on 1.5 then different ways to get to 1.5 matter and o/s leads to greater impacts. AR6 WGIII also consider higher categories – e.g. C3/4 vs C2 class. It is always beneficial to come down again if you do exceed a level

But equally common framing – if we see it as inevitable that we’ll hit 1.5 next decade anyway, then we would see o/s as desirable. The impacts and risks are certainly reduced compared to staying above (e.g. stabilising at 2 degrees)

https://mas.to/@chrisd_jones/109...

If we compare 1.5 after overshoot against 1.5 with no overshoot, then the bad impacts are greater, some irreversible and the challenge of recovery is harder (need lots more CDR). So, in this case overshoot not seen as desirable

Is overshoot “good” or “bad”? – it depends on your counterfactual, which often gets lost in the discussion. We hear a lot of “Problem with o/s is…” and also “o/s is achievable” which sound at odds. Here’s why we should be more careful with the narrative

Hence the bottom line – returning from exceeding a warming level is possible, BUT:
- It exposes us to greater risks – some irreversible
- It requires working much harder later

But many things won’t – especially sea-level and other things with a big inertia timescale. Sea level is committed to keep rising for centuries. But – mitigation is still beneficial. Cutting emissions now helps prevent further acceleration of sea-level rise. But can’t stop it completely.

The more we emit, the more we warm… hence to reverse warming we need to reverse emissions. But what does that mean? We have to actually remove CO2 from the atmosphere (carbon dioxide removal, or CDR). This has to exceed any remaining emissions

Global Warming is linked directly to CO2 emissions – very simply. The more we emit the more we warm. Hence there is a fixed amount (“carbon budget”) we can emit – for 1.5 this was 500 GtCO2 (but that’s 3 years ago – less than 400 now)
