We've got a lot happening in the Cycling Guide mobile app right now, and it's going to be a lot of fun trying it out when it gets released. We're excited! 😀🚴🏼‍♀️

Here's a sneak peek video of a new dashboard that shows speed, distance, and elapsed time while cycling a route.

And finally, are you a person who rides a bike in and around Waterloo Region and Guelph, Canada?

Our Cycling Guide mobile app still works great here, and is getting even better with new features!

In support of continuing to improve the app, we're looking for folks who would like to test one or more beta releases of our app. Sound interesting? Then please sign up to join our beta program!

Our beta testing continues! (And there are still a few tweaks to make.) We're excited that soon people will be able to use Cycling Guide app en Français! That will include people in Ottawa, Sarnia-Lambton, and Halifax. And those new areas are in addition to existing coverage of Waterloo Region and Guelph. 😀🚴🏼‍♀️

And, relatedly, check out this blog post that @DavidTrueman wrote about why we use @openstreetmap data in our app. Basically, it's highly accurate and comprehensive enough for our needs. And local OSM editors/contributors bring their local knowledge to their data contributions. And we can make changes ourselves that show up right away in our app. That's a lot of wins!

This is a cool, good news piece:

“But how do you learn how to fix your bike? And where can you access used parts and tools? Enter the community bike shop. While it isn’t a new non-profit business model, it’s a durable one, offering bike sales and maintenance, used parts and often refurbished used bikes. Another key part of the paradigm is the availability, to the public, of the tools and training necessary to fix your own bike.” — Katie Hyslop in @thetyee

Here’s a cool piece from CBC on the growth of bike sharing programs in Canada.

“Justin Hanna, director of Bike Share Toronto, said Canada's biggest city has also been seeing double-digit growth in usage, and expects 6.2 million rides in 2024 on its fleet of 9,000 bikes, up from 5.7 million the year before and just 665,000 in 2015.”

The Sustainability Office at the University of Waterloo is holding a Bike Fair on June 20.

“Join the Sustainability Office for our annual Bike Fair as we bring together campus and community partners to share information and resources to support cycling and sustainable transportation. Bring your bike for a free tune-up, connect with amazing organizations, and enjoy free ice cream!”

We think that’s pretty awesome and we’ll be there to show and talk about our app!

“Used the app for a new route this morning and my goodness, it works so damn well. I’m going to buy my kids phone mounts so they can use it, too.”

Happy World Bicycle Day to everyone who celebrates — including all the folks who ride on tricycles and quadcycles. The celebration is not just for bicycles!

Here's something we love. Vélo Canada Bikes is running Pedal Poll/Sondo Vélo (Canada's national bicycle count) June 4 to 9, 2024. It’s a grassroots initiative to “evaluate the state of cycling in our communities. Together we get a ‘snapshot’ of what cycling looks like in communities across Canada, at the same time, year over year.”

It’s easy and fun to help out. Please check it out, and sign up to help in your community!
