Reading up on a bunch of #zig stuff and it's making me realised just how used I am to scripting languages.

When I read about @fieldParentPtr, my instinct is that this is a bunch of extra stuff that needs to happen, so any performance gain from it would be offset by that.

But of course, in zig, all that stuff happens at compile time. The program doesn't have to do all of the "stuff" every time, it really only has to add or subtract some constant from a pointer before accessing, which is about the same as it has to do anyway.

But my brain reads it as "stuff happens in this code, so that is probably a performance cost"
