The Miracle of Ronald Weems
A light and funny story from Robert Bloch in 1955. Well worth reading.
"A delightful fantasy about a lingerie buyer who is stuck in a rut, and literally flies out of it. Hilarious 1950's spicy comedy, complete with blondes, gangsters, cops, and chemistry. And sex, of course. In the tradition of Thorne Smith."

We went rummaging in the cupboard while ago to clean out old stuff, especially old US stuff, and throw it out to make room. Found a bunch of cans 4-5 years expired; that is just too old for food in a metal can.
Did find a box of grits expired in 2016, but we ate them. They would last a hundred years. Still perfectly good!
So then hunting for Canadian soup and beans, we found Sprague Foods out of Bellville, ON. Got a whole bunch to try (from well.ca since there are no stores near us that carry Sprague).
Their soups are good! All organic and so on, but very tasty. I even liked the Mediterranean Lentil soup, and I can't stand most lentil dishes. Except the cauliflower soup--you have to be born on Vega for that one, I think.
Beans are OK but way too sweet. Have them for dessert.

Daily Reflections for Modern Twelve Step Recovery, by bob k.
From the back cover: Modern 12 Step recovery, and spirituality in general, is vastly different from what was encountered at the time AA was emerging from its evangelical Christian roots. Members in the current era often do not believe in God or are agnostic. Spirituality comes in shapes and sizes unimaginable in the America of the 1930s. You'll find the reflections in this book to be psychological rather than religious.
Paperback now at Amazon, with an ebook to follow everywhere.

13-year-old iMac got flaky and slow, my partner got a new one. RIP old friend---but wait!
Cleaned out old one and got it upgraded to run on Catalina---OMG so painfully slow it was unusable. Hey, the old Intel i5 4-core is not THAT bad! Does Apple slow down all their old stuff?
Switched it to Ubuntu 24-04. Goes like blazes! Everything works, even the bluetooth mouse and keyboard. A little slow to boot, but runs like a train once it's up. Perfectly usable for daily stuff.
Like a brand-new machine for free.

I spent some hours on Miners Hut (https://forum.mhut.org) and there is apparently nothing recent about the problems. (At least with modern translation apps one can sort of understand that strange site!)
Lots of guessing on Reddit /r/libgen but nothing solid. The "hosts file" work-a-round got me in briefly but no downloads. Recently the
TOR mirror worked sporadically, but not for a few days, for me.
Libgen.fun gets you the takedown notice posted below, but that was a funny mirror I think.

Never again, Apple.
After 12 years my wife's iMac was getting flaky (never shut down, never cleaned out, but anyway). So we got a new M4 iMac.
Everything is so TINY. Yeah, pictures look great on the retina screen, but what 70+ year-old wants 4 point type everywhere? We've lived in the settings for two weeks trying to get everything big enough to read. Really hard!
And getting a DOS emulator up and running; no fun. (Told you we are old.)
Next time, if we live that long, she is getting a Linux box!

You can't trust anything these days. In my small town, it's hard to find any non-corporate real food ingredients, never mind ethnic ones.
So when I found this sushi ginger in Sobey's I was pleased. Until I opened it.
Smelled funny. Tasted funky like mould. Hardly any ginger flavour.
Got my partner to read the fine print. Many chemicals, including acetic acid, citric acid, aspartame. Yuk to a power. A raccoon would not eat this.
No date, so probably shelf stable forever.
Back to making my own: sliced ginger, rice vinegar, sugar, water. Simple. Delicious.

Here is an unusual one: The Green Dragon, 1926, by J. Jefferson Farjeon.
Not Ben the Tramp, but Alfred the Tramp! Alfred, however is no detective here, just a wet-brain participant. Maybe a precursor of Ben?
This is a meandering story of a newlywed couple who find themselves in charge of a deserted inn. They then quickly find themselves surrounded by a bevy of strange ppeople who have something to do with a ruby, whose owner is problematic. Finally a story-in-story tells the tale of the ruby being stolen in China. At the end the various smugglers, thieves, and innocent bystanders get sorted out. Not really a mystery, but the story of a crime.
The casual white supremacy assumptions of 1926 England are breath-taking.

Pulp magazines used to sometimes re-use covers, but rarely titles. Here are two mags each with "A Corpse for Cinderella" from Dime Detective June 1942 (Peter Paige) and Dime Mystery May 1945 (Day Keene). Both stories worth reading if you like Pulp!

A rare book from the Dr. Fu Manchu man, this is a pleasant, short mystery story with all the tropes: a PI who is frenemy with the police inspector; beautiful woman with secrets, a corpse who is not really dead (at first), and so on. Very readable.

No, the DeACSM plugin lets you download from an acsm file as though you were running ADE. I't's been a great work-around for Linux users.

This book was a real failure, and remains so. It jumps around, the characters are cardboard, and the plot is thin. Roscoe is no Nayland Smith, and the Zones are no Si Fan.
But it is interesting, just the same. Glad to find it in Faded Page.

I find it takes a really long time to heat up-an hour. Even when I pre-heat the water to a temp over the setting. Just don't get that!

Using another thermometer, it seems the Max is running about 1.5-2 degrees below setting, but I have no real calibration equipment.
