I think these comparisons miss two important things: 1) Just like when touchscreen phones were introduced, it takes time to learn to use them efficiently (what would the results have been if the people using the touchscreen controls were already very familiar with them?) and 2) in some cars, you don’t even need to use the touchscreen — you can use voice to control nearly everything, which is most likely safer than both touchscreens and physical controls.
