We really need to learn how to pronounce the word "extinction." And we need to start shouting it in the streets. And while we're at it we need to shout the phrase "human extinction." Because no technology in the world can get us around the production limitations of photosynthesis and our food system will not withstand temperature extremes heading our way. That's just one teeny little factor. There are more.

At projected 4 ° C the human species problem is kaput. (Do the logic.) That is to say, we're done as a species. So, the question has become: what's the best way down? Does a "best way down" even exist? Oh to be young, right?

Can you imagine a world with average global air temperatures exceeding 15.5 C? That's 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels.  That's a world with temperature extremes, droughts and floods (think atmospheric rivers and large forest fires), winds, tornadoes, hurricanes, "bomb cyclones"... and a massive reduction in food production.  All that in the next 5-7 years.  Consider further that these phenomena do NOT plateau.   Nope.  They accelerate.  Welcome to the #newworseningnormal.

My knowledge of forest ecosystems is limited to fire-adapted coniferous ecotypes. I spend most of my working time in frequent, low--severity regime forests (mostly P. ponderosa with some P. menziesii). But, I also work in mixed-severity regime forests (L. occidentalis, et.al). Most of our forests have been degraded to novel ecosystems and heavily impacted by peeploids. But, it's what we have and it has its own beauty. Here's a glimpse of the mighty Columbia river north of Kettle Falls, Wa.

Education and acculturation is so key, but for sure coercion and violence eventually fail. Great questions. BTW, our survival depends upon answering them.
