I'm keeping a registry of components in the form of a list of weak references. When all other references to a component are lost, the component can be GD'd. As part of its destructor it deregisters itself from the weakref list.
The C# docs suggest weakrefs are for caching big stuff and you'll hardly ever have to write a destructor, so I'm either being clever or foolish!

Godot feels like it's probably the way forward for me, but I think I'm burnt out on editor-based development.
I started toying with MonoGame and it was like getting into a warm bath. Just code and lots of control.
