This BBC article https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c207gvrn65do is interesting, but fails to mention that females carrying the knockout gene still reproduce. The quote from "expert on mosquito mating" is strange- "Without the ability of males to hear - and acoustically chase - female mosquitoes might become extinct." This seems nonsensical, as the knockout males could never replace all the males in the population. At best the knockout spreading (via carrier females) reduces the rate of reproduction.

One school roof collapses on a w/e injuring no-one: five years later inconvenienced parents declare it is fine the government surprise schools with closure at a week's notice after all this time, as better to be safe than sorry. Why aren't more parents demanding all primary schools roads made 'school streets' despite 1,200 children, per month, injured in road traffic collisions <500 m of a school, in UK (RoSPA).
