Hi: I'd like to object against this policy because there's no actual benefit that is mentioned here. Writing code is not the struggle of maintaining an application, and typing documentation is not the struggle of documenting things. For the former, the struggle is actually understanding how to solve a problem and come up with solutions for it, along with fixing subtle errors and logic issues - writing code is the easiest part. For the latter, accuracy is key and inaccurate documentation is substantially worse then no documentation.
So: what is the actual perceived benefit then? The usage of AI for generating code means you are getting a large block of code - possibly taken from other codebases, that you must now as a maintainer review for accuracy and hope you don't hit a subtle issue you missed. It is an extra layer of code review on top of the fact you're -already a maintainer having to review people's code all day-, you now have to review code from a contributor that randomly hallucinates things and cannot answer any questions as to why code was written a certain way. How does this save the maintainer time? And if you generate documentation with it, now you have to deal with potential fallout when contributors gets confused with your documentation and submit incorrect patches. You saved yourself typing in both cases, but quite literally that is possibly the least significant timesink of any of this. How much extra time have you actually spent babysitting the tools that were meant to help you?

And, I hate to say it: but I do agree this hurts the reputation of servo and willingness of people to contribute. As someone who has worked in FOSS for years frankly getting told I need to deal with AI generated code is still more then enough to make me take my time and effort somewhere else. I mention this because frankly, a lot of people here are going to get angry and give you the same point with far less respect - and I can certainly understand that. Not only do we want to stop this in projects like servo, people working in FOSS like myself want to make sure that AI absolutely does not become a norm in FOSS as it will make maintainer's lives everywhere so much more miserable.

Also: on the topic of funding, come on guys. If you want to get AI funding fine, I know how capitalism is. But there are more clever ways of doing this and waving the shiny AI keys in front of investors to get them to give money then actually honestly using the tools. Show some demo of using ChatGPT on the browser or something, be more creative then just going "yeah well who cares about maintaining a project anyway".

And that fits with my experience too, in my own projects. It's more work, and your skill atrophies... or... does it? Do we get better at code review by going through the llm's hallucinations? ... How likely is that tenuous hope? Not likely at all, with all that lazy convenient ignorance to fall into?

LXDE is back

After many years of inactivity and due to dated code becoming problematic with late gcc developments, LXDE has received updates in the past few weeks. About the only two packages left untouched is lxpolkit and lxpanel, the rest of the group has been updated. This is a good thing because it was about the only desktop not falling pray to systemd/logind and dbus-ism.

Some said that LXDE was abandoned because of #LXQT, a lightweight #plasma / #kde thing that resembled very little of what lxde was and became just as infected by systemd mechanisms as xfce4 and others. The systemd mainstays, #debian, #ubuntu, #mint, #fedora, rushed to replace lxde with lxqt. What they sold was the name of LXDE of stability and lightweight applications to associate with the buggy LXQT dt. Why was it buggy? Because it is a corporate rat race, one chasing behind the other, Qt, Kde, plasma, and back again. By the time they'd patch one side the other had bugs. And lxqt had to follow this madness.

*Note: Qt is a graphic platform for all the Qt based applications, and desktops, ported to be identical in X and in wayland, in theory, in practice .. not quite ported YET! *

What we should know, here in #joborun, is that you don't have to run #LXDE as a complete desktop, you can run its components individually into openbox, like lxpanel for panel/menu/dock etc. pcmanfm as desktop are with icons (pcmanfm --desktop ) lxrandr, lxappearance or lxappearance-obconf, lxlaunch, lxtask, lxterminal, etc., Only lxsession requires a logind (consolekit2 in our case) polkit and dbus. This is the component that makes the difference of the full desktop. This has the benefit of starting something like gparted or pamac-manager from menu and raise/lower root/user rights automatically, or automount devices (another mess and a half).

Long ago when Poettering was asked at a conference why was he treating users like they were disabled, his response was "what do you have against disabled people?"

This underlines the entire logic of systemd and most desktops. #LXDE is the exception

you can only play all of soffmi muhod once per 24hr or so before you're hearing the same again... which is nice, but, why are there no other artists like this? ... or maybe there are, but i just dont know how to find it (warp records, closest i could reference), not sure soffmi muhod knows what it is either. like if you search experimental, nah, that's not what soffmi muhod's doing. and if you search zonk, the genre soffmi muhod seems to have independently created/coined, the term's not used by other artists the same. and soundscape, ambient, they're not really on the same mark either. audio art, is an ambiguousification unhelpful too. ... there are probably llm tools that could figure out something similarish on some level... but it'd be like getting an llm to find something like boards of canada, and ending up with those who are hanging on boards of canada's coat-tails, shallow copies, missing the depth of all else the artists put into it, just "sounds a bit like", but not the same kind of creative spark, the uniqueness... like it's hard to pin soffmi muhod down... at least so i find. does it defy useful genre'ification, languishing in "experimental"? i'm not so sure what soffmi muhod's doing is "experimental". it's like ... it's like when you see a painting, and the little plaque next to it, says, the price, and the materials used. how shallow. it's like listening to autechre and thinking it's just noise. pearls before swine. like saying autechre's adequately surmised as experimental too. autechre seem more experimental than soffmi muhod, and it's still faaaaar inadequate a description. the frustration in pigeonholing soffmi muhod does not stop there... it's also hard to pin down what it is to like about it. perhaps best i've heard, could also serve as a new genre to call it by: headspace.]
