I will be moving little by little to @dcm, because it is an instance maintained by a local public institution, and I want to encourage that.
I will probably keep this account active, mostly to keep easy access to my old posts and exchanges, but I plan on posting mostly if not exclusively on the new one for now. So in case, follow me there!

Her main point is that philosophy is like the glia cells in the brain, doing the long-term, behind the scenes work of forging and pruning connections between the neurons, that is, between the different fields of human knowledge.

A couple of photos from the impressive botanical garden in Bayreuth (the guided visit was part of a very cool and engaging summer school in philosophy and AI).

I'm not here (only) for that, though, but rather for the exciting Bayreuth Summer School in Philosophy and Computer Science: **www.eis.science/summer-school**

This closes this inaugural season of the podcast, all produced, from the music to the interviews to editing, by a small team at the Science of Intelligence Cluster, in Berlin. It was a long and intense road to get here, but I'm very happy with the results.
I hope you enjoy it, as much as we did producing it!

- In Ep4 we discuss collective intelligence, in ants, fish, and humans, with Guy Theraulaz and Jens Krause
- Ep5 is on the evolution of intelligence, with precious insights by Cecilia Heyes and Ali Boyle
- Finally, in Ep6 we investigate the boundaries of intelligence with Paco Calvo and Michael Levin: are plants intelligent? what about cells?
I'm just back from holiday (also from Mastodon) to a surprisingly rainy Umeå, and something tells me that the fact that it's always light won't help me get over my jetlag. This picture was taken at around 11pm yesterday...

This time we talk about non-human animal intelligence, especially in birds and in our chimp and bonobo cousins, with cognitive biologist Alice Auesperg and philosopher Richard Moore. Cameo by a tool-using cockatoo!

24.5.2023 14:22It was a lot of fun doing this (and lots of work!), and I hope others enjoy it too!For the past few years colleagues at the Berlin Science of Intelligence Cluster and I have put together a podcast series on intelligence research, called Punching Cards.
The first episode, on human intelligence, is just out!
The next ones will discuss intelligence in other animals, in future AI systems, in collectives, and even plants!

My spatial cognition is terrible, so I failed time and time again...
Mercifully there was an option to switch to a musical captcha instead, otherwise I would still be there trying and failing to prove I'm human (if that's what I am, not sure at this point).

But is AGI really possible? What assumptions are behind the idea that it is? How plausible are they?
On May 30th, 3.30pm-5pm (CET), philosopher Mazviita Chirimuuta (Edinburgh) will discuss these and related questions here at Umeå University.

On the afternoon of May 23rd (2pm-3.30pm CET), join us online (or in person if you happen to be around Umeå) for a panel discussion with experts from across the Humanities and Social Sciences on the risks and opportunities of ChatGPT and similar systems for Higher Education, which I will be moderating.

2.5.2023 08:28@dylan This is super useful, and works great, many thanks!Rather bizarre 'interview' with #ChatGPT (animated by a pixelated avatar with rather bad speech synthesis) on a news special about the Web on #ZDF, the second public German broadcaster (starts at 5:45).

The answers are all bland but generally optimistic about AI. The 'interview' is followed by an actual interview with a critical AI expert.
In any case this sort of humanisation of AI in a popular public broadcast strikes me as a not-so-great idea..

@tanepiper @vdignum Definitely! Even though we highlight assessment 'after the fact' in the paper, this material may also be useful at the design stage. This remains a bit underdeveloped in the paper perhaps, so might be a good direction to explore more in the future.

The framework is indeed descriptive, a tool to clarify the elements and stakes that can inform normative judgements, rather than a tool to produce such judgements.
At any rate, this is a first step, and further adjustments and additions may be called for.
Feedback and suggestions are much welcome! 4/4
