I'm now officially on the job hunt, as I join the laid off.

I'm looking for UX Research / HF Engineer jobs remote or hybrid that can be done from Austin.

I'm a Certified Human Factors Practitioner with background by way of industrial engineering and hold a PhD in HF and Cognitive Systems. I'm decidedly mixed methods and combine anthropology training with enthusiasm for data analysis in R.

I'm what happens when engineers get tired of pure, rigorous models that don't survive reality 🤓

@pluralistic

Good talk about the implications of the Swiss Cheese model of security.
The model's attributable to James Reason who also did foundational work categorizing human error. The really central part of his Slips, Trips, and Lapses is that *everyone* has bad days and different parts of your system fail you; it's very rarely carelessness. Error's scale and traceability vary, too.
If what we depend on is someone never making a mistake, I have bad news for you 😬.

Tried to repair my espresso machine. Leaky main gasket, so, standard yearly repair, right?

Nah. Company doesn't sell replacement parts and can't tell me what kind they are to buy myself.

Today, they sent me another machine.

So, yes, I can make espresso, but I'm a year out on 2 busted machines.

Welp, time to go track down parts by other means.

(Why these guys didn't just build around something like a Breville standard gasket? All the repairability; none of the effort.)

Crazy week.
Never plan anything in advance; it's asking for trouble.

I opened my mouth and forwarded a panel idea. Got put in charge of organizing it. Booked everyone and got things in order. That's Thursday night.

Some of our speakers are local and haven't met each other, so we 're having a tie-in social on Wednesday night.

Then on Friday, I'm talking at my alma mater. Gotta have enough time for the 6 y/o to get settled, so need to travel during the afternoon. (Why did I overlook that?)

It's not about sounding pretty. It's about being understood.

Ah, I see the Mastodon discourse is back to learning the lesson of not telling others their own business.
If a community is telling you what isn't working for them, arguing the details isn't going to change their minds. Doing so isn't constructive and is only making the provlem worse.

"We taught two starlings (Sternus vulgaris) to fly in a wind tunnel whilst wearing respirometry masks."

- Metabolic power, mechanical power, and efficiency during wind tunnel flight by the European starling Sternus vulgaris. (Ward et al, 2001)

Best abstract opening, ever.

Can you imagine being the person to first suggest this in a lab meeting?: "What if we got them little respirators?"
