I think the current obsession with llms and generative ai is massively overblown.

I do think there's lots of cause for concern particularly in economic areas.

But I've seen a few people expressing "disgust" at the idea of machines "doing art which is something uniquely human" ... And I have to confess it bothers me. Like, a lot.

I'm not gonna go into how human centric this is, nor how it mimics the language of oppressors throughout history who have claimed ownership over who counted as "human" ....

But even if I could ignore all that (I can't), it just seems mean spirited.

( generative ai is an awful and exploitative tool chain that statistically processes reference data to generate a plausible output to a given prompt. For the record, the allure of "free art" for commercial purposes is an understandably tempting siren song, but it's truly just another way to extract value from the labor of others while laundering the work to remove provenance)

Something that is a theme in my life, is the effort of making choices that are authentic to myself, even though I have fears about how people will react to me.

I'm sure as hell not great at it. Probably not even good at it. And sometimes I am able to make those choices because I exist in a world that privileges me in a variety of ways.

But something that comes up a lot for me and that I exercise a lot is the power of "and then?"

Because so many of my anxieties are things like "If I do X, then *they* might Y" where Y is something like "Hate me" or "Think I'm weird"...

But if I ask "And then what?" the problem goes away.

"If I wear a collar in public, maybe people will think I'm a weirdo.... and then I'll know that those are people who I don't need in my life"

"If I wear a t-shirt to this interview maybe they won't take me seriously or they'll think I'm being disrespectful.... and then I'll have avoided working at a place where they don't see my humanity"

And I love it when my players do fun and surprising things. We're fighting a pack of wolves led by a werewolf that clearly wants to eat the two harengnon in the party? Fuck yeah you can use that tree to hide in and shoot arrows down at them. That tree is kind of small though so you might be in a bit of a precarious perch. Make an acrobatics check to see if you fall when one of the wolves throws itself at the trunk of the tree.

You want to jump out of the tree now to try and one-hit two sleeping wolves simultaneously? So close, but now they're awake and angry at you.

One of my favorite things is helping my players do awesome things. "Oh you cast sleep? If you do it over here you can get both those wolves instead of just the one."

Like I'm playing the world for my players, but my goal is a good time and an interesting story. My world can be generous to my players, and to my NPCs.

I usually roll in front of the table. Not because it "keeps me honest" but because most of the action that's happening is visible to the characters and players. And I find that it's engaging. "Ok y'all, this wolf has tried to bite this invulnerable boar three times and has been injured. He's gonna make a dc 8 wisdom check to see if he's smart enough to turn tail and run.... "

I like the reaction of the table when moon-moon the wolf (who is down to like 8 hp), (and is basically alone after the rest of his pack have been killed or run off), rolls a fucking 3 on that dc 8 check.

1) explaining a better solution to the problem

2) Discovering that this feature is in beta but they still require it to work by next Thursday and there will be a big stink if it doesn't

and finally:

3) proposing an absolutely awful solution that will work with no code changes and meet the needs of everyone involved. (And will probably become a nonsense approach that they keep using over and over against instead of actually implementing the right solution)

I've earned my salary this week.
