@hongminhee random question about languages; i know that traditional chinese characters have been simplified multiple times to improve literacy of the masses. i know of simplified chinese, japanese kanji, and most recently learned of korean hanja. are they all mutually intelligible to readers? are the simplifications obvious to those who stick to traditional characters like taiwanese? it's not something i've seen much written about

Came across this article with valid criticisms of story points and a proposal for replacing them with "measured queues", based on queue theory insights. Something feels off or incomplete about the proposal to me, but i think it's a useful frame for a discussion on estimation in software, if anyone's up for it.

Never thought my first time compiling the kernel would be the microsoft wsl2 fork. Did you know wsl2 is stuck on linux 5.15 by default? Or that you could compile a newer one if you want? They just released 6.6 last week, which is at least in line with the arch linux-lts (long term support) package. This makes me less nervous something will break on upgrade in my install.

Now this is the right approach to AI:

"One feature we’re starting with next quarter is AI-generated alt-text for images inserted into PDFs, which makes it more accessible to visually impaired users and people with learning disabilities. The alt text is then processed on your device and saved locally instead of cloud services, ensuring that enhancements like these are done with your privacy in mind."

The more I get into the weeds with the more I realize just how against the grain it is. Recently stumbled on this proof of concept of a newer framework called Enhance that embraces the platform and progressive enhancement. The web has truly gotten much more powerful to use without a lot of complicated machinery layered on top. Its about time we start to use it.

So besides the likely giant planet way out on an angle to the plane of the main planets, it seems evidence is gathering for a smaller earth sized planet in the Kuiper belt at around 500 AU. So much out there is hidden because it isn’t big enough to see directly, it’s always cool to see science finding hints for those. phys.org/news/2023-09-japanese

8.1 has all the primitives for cooperative multitasking. [Revolt](revolt.run/) implements it as a common base for various async PHP libraries (amphp, reactphp). [php-tokio](github.com/danog/php-tokio) lets you use any async crate through revolt. Mind is a bit blown, in a good way.

4,000 times magnified by a Galaxy cluster’s gravitational lensing, scientists named this oldest-yet-known star (circa 12.8B yrs) Earendel. This is a very old mythological name borrowed by Tolkien as Earendil, and maybe in Frozen as Arendelle? The [Wikipedia page](en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurvan) on the name is fascinating reading. Almost makes me wish I’d given a variation of it as a middle name for one of my sons.

, , , and are all very similar template languages. has support for twig, but not the others, so I set the language manually to get the others. I did a little digging and there is a grammar for liquid and jinja2, but not tera. It seems to me like there should be a standard set up with a common grammar that can be extended by each so they aren't starting from scratch. Also shouldn't there be a common standard to those templating engines altogether?

Recently I had occasion to write a script to import data into a new CMS for a client. I started out with deno/typescript but got frustrated so quickly. Ended up writing the importer in . I have to say, reflecting on languages I've learned over the years, modern PHP really hits a nice middle between strong typing and dynamic typing that makes it much easier to debug. That and composer/packagist is simply superior to npm/yarn/pnpm/whatever-flavor-package-manager-this-year.
