library stuff, LoC subject headings, Gulf of Mexico, #uspol

The Library of Congress is reviewing a proposed change of 'Gulf of Mexico' to 'Gulf of America' and Mt. Denali to Mt. McKinley. Huge ramifications for findability and I guess the basic fabric of a shared reality. They are only allowing people to submit comments in opposition to this change today and today only. Comments should be sent to listcomments@loc.gov. Terms being considered for change are here: classweb.org/tentative-subject

Further, I urge you to communicate about and work to mitigate the dire ripple effects on scientific research, health, safety, and innovation of the Trump Administration's freeze on federal research grants (put on pause yesterday by a federal judge, but still very much a real threat). This freeze, if enacted, will be profoundly destabilizing across all sectors, nationally and internationally.

The House of Representatives is an important check within our governmental system. I expect you and your colleagues to do all you can to ensure safety for all Americans, as you took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. 3/3

Dear Representative ---,

As a resident of ---, I want to express my profound horror and disgust with how President Trump's recently released executive orders on DEI, Return to In-Person Work, the Hiring Freeze, and "Restoring Merit" (among others) are affecting the federal workforce. These orders are hostile to workers, causing chaos in their implementation and impeding the work of the American people, as well as the national interest. Workers are already hired on merit. Most members of the federal workforce are middle and lower-income. 1/3 of them are veterans and military family members. The federal workforce contains some of the most expert knowledge that there is within numerous fields. Annual spending on the federal workforce is only ~6% of the budget. To what end, this chaos? In your role as an elected U.S. Representative, I urge you in the strongest terms to protect federal workers and demand accountability from the Trump administration about the catastrophic consequences of a large scale reduction in the federal work force. This affects all of us, not just federal workers.... 2/3

Howdy. I'm working on my PhD in art history, writing on feminist artists experimenting with pre-web networked tech in the '80s. I also have a background in archives and oral history. I post extremely infrequently, but when I do, it's usually about cool/odd things I come across in my research. I live with my partner and 2 kittens (Quincy and Fig).

I love learning about old weird machines, computer/digital/software/telecommunications art and their histories, music, animal behavior, science fiction, cinema, leftist politics, etc.
