On Sunday I found this incredible wintry scene that makes you wonder wtf happened?! This #Vespula maculifrons (Eastern #Yellowjacket ) seems to have gotten frozen mid-chomp on #Daedaleopsis confragosa (Thin-walled Maze #Polypore ).

9.1.2023 18:42Work gets in the way of my #iNaturalist time :/I’ve been using #pinepellets for a couple years and I think that could be aggravating my #cats asthma, so yesterday I got worlds best cat litter (corn) but she comes out of the #litter box covered in dust lol. Do any of you have VERY low dust litter recommendations??

This is the Red Milkweed #Beetle, #Tetraopes tetrophthalmus. The base of the antennae actually bisect their eyes - inspiring their Latin name.

Wednesday’s #InverteFest is…a Locust Borer! I found this #Megacyllene robiniae in a field of #Salidago spp. (#Goldenrod ). on the sidelines of a construction site in Lawrenceville, #Pittsburgh PA. I am in love with #Cerambycidae for obvious reasons - but this one is particularly interesting because of their #Aposematism. Lots of insects take on the likeness of wasps and bees because predators associate them with stingers or chemical defenses - neither of which the Locust Borer has. They feed on goldenrod pollen and have the most adorable dense setae.

ID’d to family, from all over #Louisiana 2020-21. Malaise nets, mercury vapor light, aquatic and terrestrial nets, beat sheets, litter sifting. I don’t sacrifice any more specimens now that I’m no longer in an #Entomology program, but they deserve to be shared and celebrated! Next year I really want to meet a #Calligrapha spiraea. If God is real, she has an #InordinateFondnessForBeetles.
