There is still time to apply for our NSU summer study circle on Degrowth & Exnovation in beautiful Jyväskylä, Finland, during July 21 to 28. The NSU summer session is a family-friendly week-long gathering of multiple study-circles inviting reflection and dialogues in an open, democratic and relaxed format. It includes not just intellectual discussions, but also fun and culturally-enriching activities, including documentaries, poetry readings, hiking excursions and music nights.

Our circle this time revolves around "Building community in the midst of collapse: organizing towards degrowth futures"

For this session (the second in our series), we are calling for abstracts, papers, perspectives, statements of interest, essays, literary or artistic contributions on the topic of organizing and community building towards degrowth futures. How can we build community in the midst of collapse? What socio-ecological structures of co-living can we create together, while also dismantling the fossil capitalist economy? We welcome contributions from academics, scientists, artists, writers, NGOs, social movements, and anybody interested in participating. We are interested in discussing (past, present and future) ways of organizing together (through neighborhood associations, decentralized networks, social movements, and new urban or rural spaces) in ways that transcend the dominant growth imperative, and help contribute to the end of fossil capitalism.

My new book, Science in Resistance (out in October with UC Press) documents the evolution of the SR movement over the past 5 years. Combining personal stories, interviews with scientist-activists, and insights from research on direct action and academia, I explore the challenges scientists face when taking a stand for climate and ecological justice.

Half of the proceeds will go to SR and allied climate justice groups.

Join us in Finland to explore and discuss how to build resilient communities in the midst of collapse, while dismantling the fossil capitalist economy.

How are people organizing locally along degrowth principles of sufficiency and conviviality? What challenges do we face, and what tactics can we pursue in establishing ways of living that allow dismantling of harmful organizations, infrastructure, technologies and ideas, that contribute to extractivism and fossil capitalism?

Suggested themes of discussion include initiatives for convivial community-based leisure (let's turn airports into natural recreation areas!), paths towards nowtopias, municipal organizing, neo-ruralism, defense of the commons, convivial conservation, unlearning high-tech and promoting low-tech, among many others.
