Who counts as family is a major theme in the story and Holi has a few different kinds:

Her bio parents sent her and her sister away as refugees to emigrate to Voltun, though they were separated at the port. Once she sees her sister on the news 10 years later, getting to her is her primary motivation.

But she was raised by Sven, a fence and prominent figure in the underworld who took her in off the streets.

When my MC has a phone or other access, she has been known to wile away the hours like many of us, scrolling through various social medias, or reading. When without technology, which happens more than she'd wish, her chief pastime is wallowing in her own misery.

Yes and no. In the "modern" day in my story, magic isn't really a thing, but there are some "magical" techs like the neural implants.

But the cataclysmic *Ivyeda* that destroyed the previous from-space civilization was definitely unexplainable by science.

The civilization that was formed in the wreckage was shaped by a mystical organization that found and controlled the knowledge left by the predecessors.

It's hard for me to know if my answer here would be spoilery, but lets go.

The princess of the nation where my story takes place is about three months from being coronated and taking over for a viceroyality council that has ruled for basically her whole life. She's been on a PR trail calling for the dissolution of the whole institution and is attacked and rendered comatose by unknown actors.

The fear that permeates through most of the story for Holi is that she's afraid of rejection. It led her to abandon her best friend before the story starts rather than risk being rejected out of hand, and it motivates her relationship with her throughout the story.

She harbors romantic feelings but is afraid of even recognizing them for if she does, she thinks her friend doesn't reciprocate them.

That's emphasized with contrast, since my MC doesn't have one and society has moved on without people like her.

More than a thousand years after the *Ivyeda*, a catastrophe that led to the initial settlers on the planet's demise, they've built up to a base of tech that's only a little beyond our own. about 30 years before the start of the story, the neural implants that have taken the world by storm. But they don't come with substantially different tech in other fields

There are two POV characters, but the main character is:

Holi: Living in Voltun isn't easy when you're one of very few without the now ubiquitous neural implants. It's even harder when you're a homeless orphan who's alienated just about every friend you've ever had. She's ~20, and a quick-talking firebrand who never lets good sense get in the way of a good idea.

2. Probably not, and mostly for inertial reasons. I've tried to make this world feel like a realistic alternate one that has some new tech but also tradeoffs in other problems.
3. My stories are infused with my knowledge, they are products of all of it.
4. I'm currently not researching, explicitly, but I will be conlanging, and working out the speculative biology of the world.

My WIP is a New Adult-focused Cyberpunk novel, with the working title "Sister Heist".

The princess is in critical condition and a suspect is in custody, but none of that can hold Holi's attention over the grainy image of her long-lost sister shouting at the cops as they took the suspect away. She must lie, cheat, and steal her way to get to her, but finds that she can't stay out of the rising tension in Voltun.

One of the reasons her housing situation is so unstable is that before the events of the story, she had a falling out with her friend over the exes mentioned above. And basically cut all ties for like a year. This included moving out of the apartment they shared.

And when all her contingencies fall apart and she hits rock bottom with only the clothes on her back, the story begins.

- the couch of her friends' exes
- an empty house kept vacant by its landlords
- an underpass/abandoned warehouse (nap)
- the atrium of a housing project

By the current time, religion has become more ancillary to life, but certain beliefs still shape things. When neural implants became popular, religion made some people reluctant to use them. My MC's parents refused to get them and my MC had to flee her home
