Hi Fedi,
Just got laid off a month after buying our first house because the company is "right-sizing" its staff.
We have moved to a small town in NC hoping for better life, thinking our jobs will last us years. Small town living is great, but not many jobs around.
If anyone knows of any remote US opportunities for a graphic designer with some coding & web design experience that spent last couple years with data analysis/entry in a remote office do let me know.
Boosts appreciated ❤️ Thanks!

Then I stumbled upon a cheap, DIY alternative that recycles old plastic bottles to achieve the same and is now used around the world to bring light into homes of many who need it.
This whole endavor has a big #solarpunk energy! Check it out:

Feels like a good short story and is beautifully shot using vintage (but not quite period) equipment. Form goes hand in hand with function to make for an interesting and somewhat quirky watch.
Highly recommended!

It's a fun *horror* film presented like a VHS recording from a TV in the 80s. You got news and a special live investigation into supernatural, peppered with a plethora of local commercials. It's a cheesy, cozy and fun flick!
I can totally see @ajroach42 making something like that!
1.11.2023 01:52It's Halloween so once again I'm rewatching WNUF Halloween Special 1987......also, I think it's pretty cool that nowadays we are still able to use machines that are close to a decade old.
With how quickly the tech used to progress in the 80s and 90s, I would probably be like 2 generations behind and not able to use any contemporary software.
I used to upgrade my PC in late 90s/early 2000s almost every year.
Now, I probably spent less than $100 total on keeping this machine working for over 7 years :)

I had it close to 8 years now and before today it needed repairs twice.
This time the power supply died and the power socket needed replacing as one cable was loosing connection. While I was "in there" (it's somewhat annoying to get to everything) I also put a replacement touchpad as mine was misbehaving for few weeks now.
I'm just glad to have it back, hopefully I will last me a while longer...

I somehow forget that those people have years more experience than me & use quality tools and materials. Working in this "cheap and cheerful" way helps be get over that and have fun making.
I feel like I should try to make some grand point here, but all I have is this realization. So...
Make stuff, have fun 😃 👍

The whole thing is pretty much just bits of cardboard boxes and wooden coffee stirrers. It uses some 3d printed details, a printed graphic for the front window & a bit of foamcore to keep the thing from breaking as I worked on it, but that's like 10% of materials and another 10% for glue.
…and while I think it's pretty cool that you can turn some cheap supplies into a half-decent model, there's more to this.

So, for a while now I've been slowly making miniature things - it's quite relaxing and lets me do things away from screens.
I keep the stuff I make mostly to myself, as they are either not done or not that good, but wanted to share this building from #DiscoElysium because I'm proud of it...

He has a knack for making simple, but competent AI, that reminds of pseudocode or a paper computer and makes me want to try to make something similar.
Ordered one of his games to get a feel for them, but I already have an ideas for some games in that format.

I'm really enjoying the process so now I want to make tokens for a bunch of different planes and already have ideas for a solo adventure game about being a WW1 pilot.

Hey @neauoire (and anyone versed in the ways of the sea). Is there a difference between a port and starboard doors on a vessel?
I decided to create myself a model ship (the tramp steamer from King Kong), and want to make it somewhat realistic.
My thinking is that doors on the sides of the ship would open like in a car - the hinges facing forward to prevent it from the wind blowing it open, but also stumbled upon a (german) 3d model that has different door orientations 🤔

It required some tweaks to my 11ty setup as I wanted the wiki style links from Obsidian to generate properly on my site AND to be able to organize it in folders when I want while still keeping the flat site structure I had.
It's kinda hacky, but I'm still proud of myself for getting it done.
Next step is to migrate the random project files into Obsidian and then start tackling all the orphaned files.
Really enjoying all this!

When I write notes I will often jump from one idea to another, and Obsidian supports that fully. For the first time ever I'm actually having as much fun taking digital notes as I do with pen and paper.
Now I'm learning more about personal knowledge management systems and thinking how to incorporate into my website workflow.

It's a surprisingly deep and emotional experience with amazing world building that kept me full of wonder on every step. It played like a good in-person RPG session. Highly recommended!
Also, when I was getting close to the end, I took a day off from playing and made a printable 3d model of an in-game vehicle (from the screenshot below) as a way to prolong my experience: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5188659
