As the years go on, I find that the 1984 TV version of #TheChristmasCarol with George C. Scott has replaced the 1951 version Alistair Sim-led version as the superior film. The production design, the pacing, the atmosphere (which the ‘51 version excelled at as well) — and, of course, the acting. In fact, it seriously needs to be considered one of Scott’s top performances. Just my humble opinion.

You have all the money in the world. You could work on innovations that would benefit humanity for the rest of your life and be thought of as a hero. You’ll always live comfortably, maybe find a life partner, and build lifelong friendships with people who you know would like you for you. Instead, with your all consuming desire to be a celebrity and to own the libs, you’ll live in infamy as someone of hate or stupidity…or both. Forever.

I don’t think I was prepared to see #AkiraKurosawa ‘s Drunken Angel (1948) tonight. I knew #ToshiroMifune ‘s character was struck with tuberculosis, but it was so difficult to see him wasting away, lashing out with fear and anger at the yakuza life he chose for himself and didn’t know how he could break free of (if he really even wanted to). I know his international breakout performance was years later with The Seven Samurai but this ranks with some of the best performances of pre-1950’s cinema.

#Rashomon truly is a very entertaining, compact film. Clocks in at just 95 minutes and has a fascinating story that really moves. I can imagine a lot of people who won’t watch anything in black and white and haven’t seen something older than 1990 could get involved in it. Has a true modern sensibility that could easily have taken place in 1950s Japan rather than the feudal past. #Kurosawa was a masterful, one-of-a-kind artist (as if we didn’t know already!). #ToshiroMifune #classicfilm

I’m tearing through all of these #Kurosawa /#Mifune movies and I just saw Scandal. Haven’t seen Mifune so…sexy - damn sexy. A lot of over-the-top elements, but still a slick presentation of a story we wouldn’t have seen in the U.S. in 1950.
