In my new article for @TheSkeptic, I try to put a realistic spin on the feasibility of a killer fungus like the one featured in the TV series The Last of Us.

Zombie fungi are unlikely, but we could be facing more dangerous fungal infections.

@PubPeer, maybe, you will react to two my emails to the support team?

Or you prefer to keep barring the publication author from discussing his own preprint just because he has no appropriate institutional email?

You did not accept my institutional email, manually dropped two successful applications with a personal email, ang you are keeping ignoring my emails to the support.

How is free discussion possible with such barriers?

Researchers tried to check a set of solvent for suitability to alternative non-water biochemistry. Liquid carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid appeared to be not so bad.

In this short story, I am covering a new preprint by Venus Cloud Life group.

This story was my entry for the contest What's Your Story? by The Scientist. It has not been shortlisted and selected for publishing, so I have posted it on Springer Nature Research Communities.

This issue has nice yellow cover and inludes my article on the evolution of the biological bases of AI. You can find it as the first article in the issue, after the Editor–in-Chief's introductory note.

Earlier, my article was posted ahead of issue.

A new paper on the blood microbiome of HCV patients might close a gap in our recent work

Our paper on bacterial lipoxygenases has been cited by the group working on a problem of HCV-related cirrhosis. The context of this citation might provide the solution of a long-lasting problem of our project and valuable insights in the role of lipoxygenases in Sphingomonadales bacteria

I am now volunteering to test the AI engine by @mindthegraph, a science infographic service.
Below, you could find two examples of the AI generations for illustrating my research on cross-kindgdom bacteria. You can see "bacteria jumping from plants to a patient" and "bacteria jumping from a banana to a human".
I really love these AI arts and will include them (and other generations from the same batch!) into a new text post on my project. Stay tuned!

I have updated my bioRxiv preprint about the cross-kingdom pathogens which are able to infect both plants and humans. The preprint provides computational evidence for the role of lipoxygenase enzymes in such host jumps. Its full text is available by this link:
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

This is the fifth version of the paper. One of its innovation – text labels added to the network visualisations of the "ecological portrait” of the studied bacteria.

One of the journals has a new trick.
The "Funding" field on the manuscript submission (type = research article) is marked as mandatory, and the submission system does not let in if no funding source is specified.

What if there are none, like in my case? If I have no funding, and the work is done without money — now what, it can't be published?

I put "I have no funding" in the fund name field and "NO GRANT" in the grant number field, just so the system would "eat" my submission.

The article series ” Do we really discover...” for @TheSkeptic goes on with the new article. Here, I skeptically investigate the question whether scientists have recently discovered pain in insects – or maybe insects perceive noxious stimuli in a quite other way which cannot be called ”pain”?

My biological infographic in BioRender is in surprising demand.

Recently, I created the life cycle diagram of the slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum (that's my aggregative multicellular bunny) and submitted it as a template.

So far it has 245 views, 45 downloads, 9 likes.

The picture itself is below.

Discovery of Thiomargarita magnifica — the biggest-ever bacterium — urged us to revisit our recent bioinformatic finding of lipoxygenase enzyme in Beggiatoa, the closest relatives of Thiomargarita. Is this cell-to-cell signalling marker somehow related to Beggiatoa's and Thiomargarita's large size?
