Something I've been seeing from the beginning and worried might lessen interest from relevant companies in pushing VR tech forward if they can't convince consumers the more expensive higher-end stuff is a good thing and worth spending money on.
FTA: "The “race to the bottom” he’s referring to here is precisely that main talking point connected to mainstream adoption: price. The market has been flooded with low-cost VR solutions for years, from Google Cardboard/Daydream to Samsung Gear VR to thousands of products and companies you’ve never heard of. One can credibly make the argument that these things ultimately did more harm than good. They did a fine job getting some version of virtual reality into a lot of hands, but when that experience isn’t a particularly good one, it’s easy to image those people writing off paying a lot more money for VR in the future."

The question is not, is it the right way to go, but more, how do we accommodate it, and how do we make sure it's done effectively and equitably, with a minimum of disruption to affected industries. It's also possible that it's not possible without significant disruption. Either way, I think we're about to find out over the next few years.

I like to have total control over my social experiences in MMO games, and do not want to be 'forced' into grouping up. I always want it to be optional.
