Each version takes its time through the ~20 minute duration, and definitely foreground repetition (though in continuously shifting/morphing proportions). Danny’s “studio” version is heavily collaged, whereas my “live” one was recorded (at home) in a single take, using a #modularsynth patch to loop both the guitar parts and digital rips of the homemade record in various ways. #musodon

Today is #BandcampFriday and I’d like to share with you my latest release, which has been out a couple of months. It’s a collaboration with local SF composer Danny Clay and artist Jon Fischer, featuring a collection of homemade records, #fieldrecording, and looped layers of electric guitars (my contribution); the album features two complementary realizations of the piece, one per side of the clear vinyl LP. Hear it here: http://gfguitar.bandcamp.com/album/turntable-drawing-no-16

Bachianas Brasileira No. 5 is not a spooky piece, but Rockmore’s performance of it never fails to slightly creep me out. (End) #musodon

The link below is cued to the reprise of Heitor Villa Lobos’s Aria/Cantilena from Bachianas Brasileira no. 5, which is to be sung with closed mouth in the original soprano setting: https://youtu.be/3PRbibn_o94&t=330
Rockmore’s playing is so subtle here that I’m almost convinced I’m listening to a voice there (cont)
The sound of the theremin conjures spooky vibes, largely due to its usage in science fiction and horror films, from *The Day the Earth Stood Still* to its sound-alikes in the Simpson’s *Treehouse of Horrors.* But maybe there is an inherent *uncanny* quality in the theremin? For starters, it’s an instrument that you do not touch, though there is a direct correspondence between the thereminist’s movements and the ensuing sound (cont’d)

2.11.2022 03:25Make that Shapeshifters Cinema in Oakland! My bad.I wrote about an upcoming performance/installation of Edward Schocker’s Dodecachordon I–VI, coming up this Sunday (11:52am–6pm) at Shapeshifters Cinema in Berkeley. Schocker reimagines the six classic Church modes in #justintonation with six electric guitars and ebows.
