Yesterday, I updated my os (#manjaro, at the moment), rebooted my computer, and got only a black screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2 yielded full-screen tty. Startx from there got me nowhere. my graphics card drivers were erroring out.

To fix it, I had to educate myself on the hardware driver situation used in manjaro: mhwd. It's pretty slick once you get the hang of it, but what wasn't clear was that I had to use mhwd to upgrade my linux kernel, then remove the old one, and only then would the tool allow me to install the correct graphics card driver. From there it just worked, but it's a good thing I had a full day to spare to get my machine working again.

I've been working remote since the beginning of the pandemic. My work gets done. My manager supports my argument that I have an immune compromised partner, and can't get her sick. There was no problem.

HR gets involved and won't buy the argument that they should accommodate me on behalf of my partner. "We wish we could help you," they lie "but the law blah blah blah."

So, I have my doctor write me an accommodation. HR proceeds to deliberately misunderstand, and sends menacing letters to me via registered mail. We go round a couple times, but I get the sense they're trying to bait me into demonstrating uncooperativeness in the process so they can fire me for cause.

The short of it is that I'm supposed to RTO next week. Needless to say, I'm looking for a job now.

One quick note for anyone considering doing likewise is diving can be super dangerous for people with lung conditions in particular because of the increased risk of the very worst kind of diving injury. I'm also using an aggressive oxygen dose ceiling, which is another risk. Either of these risks are the kind that could kill you. Clearly, I do dangerous stuff when it's fully my own choice and the only one at risk is me. Anyways...
For 5 weeks, I did 3 dives per day lasting between 1 to 1.25 hours and breathing air with oxygen content enriched to 0.33.
So 33% OX 3 times per day for an hour, right?
Wrong!
Since we're diving, we're breathing gas mix under pressure varied according to depth. For example: 33' depth is equivalent to one additional atmosphere of pressure compared to ambient pressure at sea level. Thus, the volume of a measure of gas at sea level is halved at 33' depth. Said another way, the dose of each gas in an equivalent volume is doubled. For each additional 33' of depth, add another atmosphere of pressure, and increase the multiplier on the gas dose by one. So 33% OX at 66' depth is equivalent to 100% OX at sea level. Go deeper, and you get OX concentrations greater than 100% OX equivalent at sea level.
Here's the depth profile of my favorite dive from this last trip. Others were similar:
* 110' for 5 minutes (143% OX)
* 90' for 5 minutes (123% OX)
* 80' for 5 minutes (113% OX)
* 70' for 10 minutes (103% OX)
* 60' for 10 minutes (93% OX)
* 50' for 10 minutes (83% OX)
* 40' for 10 minutes (73% OX)
* 30' for 10 minutes (63% OX)
* 20' for 10 minutes (53% OX)

So it ends up to be between 53% and 143% OX * 1 hour * 3 / day * 5 weeks. This seems to have helped quite a lot with my particular symptoms. YMMV

I've essentially done 5 weeks of self-administered oxygen therapy (I'll follow up with details. It's #DiveNerd stuff), and my #LongCovid cough is all but gone. So I decided to give it a little test and go for a little super-easy run.
It's expected that starting #running again after some months off should be a bit miserable at first, and I can report no surprises there: yes, a bit miserable. But also not as bad as I feared. I felt a bit asthmatic at the end, but otherwise fine.
I was feeling pretty optimistic until I compared my garmin stats from before I got COVID to today. I mean, I do have optimism that I may be able to start to pick up some running again, but comparing current measurements to what they were before, or even what they had been after recovery from some injuries, it's clear my health is compromised. This chart made my jaw drop. I didn't know this chart even went this low, lol:

On the other hand, as an old white dude, and given that everyone has heard quite enough from old white dudes, I could also STFU, which is what I opted to do.
I’m happy to have been wrong. Whatever the end result is, given the fire that has taken hold of regular folks to elect a black, Asian woman POTUS, clearly his stepping down was the right choice. Even believing as I do that elections can’t save us, and that there’s more trouble ahead no matter what happens here, this small movement toward awakening is important and I acknowledge it.

My partner and I mask 100% of the time we share air with anyone else. Out here, that amounts to just the grocery store, but folks always at least act like they can’t hear us, and sometimes the vibe is downright hostile. I think we are the only two people on this whole island who are masking.
I did try to talk to some folks I met to see if I could at least understand what the deal is. Seems to be about a connection on the level of vibes with having been made to do stuff by the government previously.
Oh well. I’m not going to be getting in anyone’s face about it, but I’ll still be masking.
