It's the time of the year: a paper submitted 1.5 years ago finally got accepted by the journal. 🎉 🎉 We've had only two referee contacts in the meantime.

Of course, I got already used to all sorts of little games played by "referee B", but it has been a truly frustrating experience for my student.

Still, I am thankful to the journal who handled this professionally and ultimately in a science-supporting way.

And I fully agree with our Dean of Studies:

A working group involving students and lecturers is currently discussing further improvements.

All the good things must change and only that which changes remains good.

This is, of course, a no-brainer:

Almost three quarters of students also particularly appreciate the fact that they can participate in research projects as students.

Of course, we are more than happy if students join our research groups and help us solving the problems and challenges that we ourselves were too stupid to solve so far.

Three quarters of respondents are very satisfied with the support they receive from lecturers for questions and problems and gave their university five out of five stars.

In fact, we try to be approachable and supportive as lecturers. Still, there is room for improvement in order to also reach out to the last quarter.

On my way back from Graz U where I was happy to give a few lectures on the functional renormalization group (FRG) at the Graduate Days.
A great place with enthusiastic and deeply curious students (grilling me to the core with their excellent questions).

Since the FRG aims at connecting the microscopic fundamental description with the macroscopic observables, it felt like a great place to be (also building on a long tradition).

My contribution to the Kafka memorial year:

A student just told me: he submitted his application for Bafög (German study funding) 9 months ago.

Since then nothing has happened. (Implying no funding since 9 months). He tries to get in touch with the contact person at the office since months. The doors are locked, no concrete response by E-mail: please call our service desk.

Phone consultation hours: only twice a week 9-12. Of course, nobody picks up the phone. No waiting loop, nothing. 1/2
