Continuing Series: Tacos. I don’t rate tacos. I just only post them if I’d eat them again. I would happily eat the tacos from Barrio Comida in Durham, UK again. Between us we had tacos al pastor, carnitas, pollo al carbón, camarones, y papas. The salsa morita was spiced but not super spicy, and the salsa fresca had just the right mix of tomato, onion, and lime. The tortillas (corn, obvs) were house-made, and the totopos were light and salted. The guac was great. The Ranch Water was two-for-one.

Today has been an extremely hard day in an already extremely hard year. My career is stalled and in free-fall. A friend and colleague hurt me deeply. Medication is kicking my ass. My body won’t let me be a field archaeologist, academia doesn’t want me, and the private sector isn’t keen on brainy ethicists in niche areas of research. So I deactivated at the bird site, cleaned up my other socials, had a little cry, and now I’m going to nap.

I’ve been sick (really sick, non-COVID sick) since the day I got back to the UK. So about two weeks now. I’ve missed every single holiday plan and event I’d made for us. I’ve been panicking I won’t be allowed to fly again for Christmas. I’ve had to be off of my regular meds because of contraindications with the many other meds I’ve had to take to keep physically breathing (again, not COVID.) So yes, I AM bawling that the England team is bringing home Dave the cat from Qatar.

Tonight my nephew (9) and I played “National Parks” Monopoly. I landed on the Everglades and said, “I’m not going to buy this because historically attempting to develop the Everglades has ended badly.” Several turns later my nephew landed on the space. His response was, “Haha, now I own the Everglades, give me lots of money!” This is all made funnier because my father, his grandfather, the top environmental consultant in Florida…was overseeing both interactions.

Right now is a bit of a mad scramble for a lot of folks (me included) to not lose digitally situated connections and communities. As things settle, we need to consider the ethical ramifications of this ‘decentralization’, so that what we create is more fair, kind, and equitable. For me, that’s starting with how I think about my use of this platform. I’m training myself not to think in terms of ‘my birdsite network’ and instead think of how the connections I make and have build community.
