“the vision outlined in Abundance mostly neglects questions of power and redistribution”

“it’s baffling to argue China’s success in building out critical infrastructure is simply a result of a combination of power abuses and the absence of regulations and “debating with judges.” There are many countries in the world that have authoritarian governments and loose environmental and building regulations. None of them has managed to build high-speed rail at breakneck speed”

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to talk about how DOGE hasn't reduced the cost of our government.

Failing at that seems likely. Parents can only do so much to defeat propaganda. The likely typical case will be failure to prevent baby's utility to fascist cake frosted thickly in seductive fallacies about efficiency as value and framing gambits that impair understanding of government. So, fault falls not upon mama. It's a village problem really. One the village isn't really aware of afaict.

I despise generative AI. That said, using it or any other tool to obtain a consequential grade is not "cheating" — its simply playing.

To understand now you need to understand that, because you're either a victim of that game or responsible for changing it.

But everyone who can't escape the dehumanizing assortment into classes and ranks of human tool that we've so proudly constructed should — instrumentally and normatively should — use every advantage to land in a box they will like. Everyone.

“A model train works like a train because it is a model of a train” 🤔 Hmmmm. This lands...and squishes flowers when it does. Digital 'AI' is a sloppier model of any brain than any model train ever was of any train.

“When we speak about corporate products as capable of some special category of experience, we are creating opportunities to justify extreme deregulation for the companies that build them. Manipulating social imagination about these products into categories of human rights requiring protection sets a stage for a whole range of arguments that allow companies to intervene in political speech and organization, unique exceptions to data rights under the provision of a “right to learn,” and more.”

I want to be clear that I think LLMs are a terrible approach to software development and an ethical disaster overall. I'm not keen to offer the excuses the bone grinders crave.

But if programmers are gonna stand back right now and say programming should happen within metaphors and picky weird precise dialects that confuse the ever loving bujeez out of even extremely precise thinkers and speakers, because that's optimal for a highly experienced few? That's not gonna come out optimal for anyone.

Wide paved walks, corner ramps, clear crossings, audible signals are not the only way to have everyone able to survive urban design carelessness and automotive violence. But they're broadly empowering ways.

LLMs are not that, I think. They're narrowly-enabling excludable systems of control. And as a friend put it: On-lining nuclear power, burning the earth, and turning programming into debugging what colleagues' bone dust wrote isn’t the best way to get it done.

Unless better ways are blocked.

Basically if the right tool for the job is one that most of humanity can't hold onto, it's not the right tool when they want to do the job.

And I will argue that if the tool is "control over the machinery that controls most activity" then it's like sidewalks or something, even "most can use" is inadequate. Such things aren't done until they are for everyone.

LLM boosters gain justification where arcana-ability gates access to work surfaces and LLMs enable working the arcana from plain English.
