I'm maining the Moonlight sword, just so I can "sing" its name at the screen in the style of Cats (well, atm it's more of a croak) whenever it gets me out of a snag. Quite a few enemies do not have a cogent response to "it just ignores shields, yo" and since my last stroll through Boletaria was years ago, I don't mind breaking the game a little. #CozySouls

Privately, I've been replaying the PS3 version of Demon's Souls, cranked up to 60fps and 1080p. It holds up tremendously, but then, I've always been a sucker for FromSoft's little lighting and material tricks that make their games look more impressive than they technically are, e.g. all the intense glow in the aforementioned game or Sif's fur in Dark Souls.

Not having played FF7 Rebirth yet, do I expect it to make good on that potential?
Eh, honestly, no. Again, if even the big atomic lizard with his undeniable connection to Japan's WW2 trauma can merely gesture at a notion of guilt towards the victims of that war, I don't expect Godo Kisaragi to sit his daughter down and tell her that his generation absolutely wasn't the good guys.

...as a kid who grew up in (West) Germany, while I might ever so slightly sympathize, I can also not deny how being useful buffers against the Soviets afforded most of the previous Axis nations a pretty prosperous second half of the 20th century.
That's why Yuffie's story fascinates me, because it's clunky Japanese revisionism that has the potential to say something poignant about the repeated seduction of new generations to narratives of past glory.

There is obviously a bit of a complication to that narrative:
In the real world, the Japanese Empire sought to subjugate other countries and committed some of the most ghoulish atrocities in recorded history. Modern day Japan still struggles to confront that reality. To wit: Even the most recent Godzilla movie only took absolute baby steps in that direction.
Did American imperialism dilute Japan's cultural identity and turn it into a de-facto vassal state? Sure, but...

Initially, Yuffie is more of a nuisance and a bit of comic relief. A "ninja" of uneven aptitude, trying to pilfer as much of that all-important materia ... until the heroes reach her home of Wutai, once a proud nation of warriors, brought low after losing a war and now reduced to a quaint tourist destination.
Yuffie wants to bring power back to her people and if this didn't scream "post-war ennui" loud enough, don't worry, the place literally looks like feudal Japan.

Okay, not sure if this is a strictly a mental health or specifically ADHD thing, but what's currently blocking me from starting FF7 Rebirth is that I still haven't played the DLC of Remake, a side story featuring Yuffie Kisaragi.
I like Yuffie. A lot. Her backstory is one of what seems to be one of the less discussed aspects of FF7, even though it's just as much inspired by real world events as the warnings about corporatism and environmental destruction.

The results are far from good, but at least we get to entertain the headcanon of Christian Lindner and Sarah Wagenknecht secretly meeting in a Berlin hotel room tonight for the most off-puttingly spiteful & angry sex imaginable.

It's cute, the free-form puzzles are fun, but they didn't really have a good idea for combat and all the characters just waffle on endlessly about shit we already know.
And even graded on a curve, all the contrived shit Nintendo pulls in making Zelda the protag, but still not really the hero in her own story ... really fucking over this juvenile aversion to feminist cooties.
