Back in November I finally started learning Javascript and for 's project with the Association for the Prevention of Torture: gmschroeder.com/data_vis/vfsg- Here are a couple static versions of my visualisations, which show the growing adoption of different legal measures for preventing torture.

I'm using Genuary to continue learning Javascript - late submissions TBA!

Despite having a busy month, I also managed to submit a for 's latest project with Noise Solution, a charity based in the East of England that uses a music mentoring programme to positively impact the lives of at-risk youth. They have a great mission and evidence-based programme, and I also had a lot of fun working with their colourful branding and music theme!

I used (+ Figma for the text). More details and code links are on my website: gmschroeder.com/data_vis/vfsg-

🧵 I attended my first conference () this past week! A few highlights:

1. Having the opportunity to present some of our team’s work on requirements capture (slides: gmschroeder.com/software/rseco). (Shown here sneaking in one of my favourite data visualisations - one of cartographer Harold Fisk’s maps of the evolution of the Mississippi River - as an analogy for complex, evolving research projects).

What do you do when you need a flexible coding project for work placement students? My (unsurprising) answer: show them how to make . I wrote my own tutorial so I could introduce them to a couple of data science libraries and explain some more general generative art concepts: gmschroeder.com/blog/intro_pya

This post was also my first time using to embed and execute code blocks, which is a really nice feature for tutorials.

For 's May project with the Global Deaf Research Institute (GDRI), I used to visualise information about sign language use among deaf Nigerians. This project was both quite outside my comfort zone (I haven't had to wrangle messy survey data before!) and right in my wheelhouse (helping researchers through software and data analysis).

's next project launches tomorrow! vizforsocialgood.com/join-a-pr. It’s been a great way for me to volunteer my data skills while learning new approaches - I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a new project.

Here’s my vis of VFSG's volunteer contributions for the last project. Each ray represents a submitted vis; longer rays = vis from returning volunteers (the longer the ray, the more vis that volunteer has contributed) and thick rays = vis selected to present.

I decided to make the data encoding fairly straightforward. Here’s a legend for the rays.

I still need to make a legend for the non-profit data! There are two features impacted by the data. The shape's number of sides is determined by the non-profit's follower count on social media (more followers = more sides) as a rough measure of the charity’s reach and level of recognition. The colour is determined by the project’s topic (e.g., blue = health, pink = education)

's latest project focused on its data on volunteer submissions and non-profit partners. I made data art of each past VFSG project, with the goal of celebrating VFSG's community and growth. The volunteers' visualisations are represented by rays of light that illuminate the mission and impact of the project's non-profit partner (represented by the layered geometric shape).

Here are two of my favourite outputs. All 48 projects: gmschroeder.com/data_vis/vfsg-

Another set of more naturalistic outputs, but with softer lines than my previous mountain-like outputs. I've decided to call the system as a whole "Coastlines" as homage to the inspiration (Vera Molnár's "La Ciotat," which Google tells me is the name of a French coastal town) and as a reference to the system's natural features and primary shapes.

It's interesting finding outputs from this generative system that work together - it feels similar to the card game "set" where the objective is to find cards where every feature (e.g., number of items or colour) is either the same or different across all of the cards. My previous piece and these two new ones have similar colour palettes, numbers of curves, and low-amplitude variability, but otherwise very different features.
