I brought Tommy home with me from my parent’s house last summer because my father was dying. They already had 7 cats, but a couple years ago a dying old man asked my parents to take him, so they did.

Tommy was a sweetie. He has a black pumpkin nose and massive catcher’s mitt shaped paws because of all his extra toes. The first time I gave him an eye kiss, his eyes widened as big as the moon. I don’t think he ever been “kissed” before.

I painted this interpretation of Johannes Vermeer’s (1632-1675) ‘Woman in Blue Reading a Letter’ as a Christmas gift this year for my mother.

I learned a lot about using a limited palette, but almost nothing on light and shadow because Vermeer was so genius I couldn’t begin to crack his code.

And yes, I know there’s a Butterfinger candy bar on the table and that they weren’t manufactured in the 1600s, but that’s what my mother would keep in her jewelry box.🤪
