level 22 here I am!

がんばれ!

Very recently I tried do listen to ドラえもん in Japanese, without subtitles. I'm bad at listening, but I get some things, which is nice.

"Canada wasn’t alone. Japan, holding over $1 trillion in U.S. debt, signed on and started to sell those US Treasury bonds which scared Trump shitless. Key EU countries—collectively sitting on another $1.5 trillion—nodded in agreement. This wasn’t a bluff. It was a silent pact. A coordinated move to remind Trump that the free world doesn’t just roll over when he swings his tariff bat. Hurt us, Carney said, and we’ll hurt you—right where it counts."

It seems announced the decommissioning of that domain 2 years ago. And that they thought it was a good ideia to not keep the domain under their control after that. Big lol

Just reached level 20!

"Welcome to Level 20. Kind of a milestone, if I say so myself. It’s also the last level in the “苦 painful” category too. I wonder what’s next 🤔

When you finish up Level 20, you’ll know quite a bit.

  • 98.8% of the JLPT N4 kanji (as well as 100% of the JLPT N5 kanji).
  • 65.94% of the JLPT N3 kanji.
  • The amount of kanji a Japanese 3rd grader should know (and 70% of what a 4th grader should know).
  • 87.03% of the kanji on NHK Web Easy.
  • 76.92% of the kanji on the average Japanese Wikipedia articles."

I decided to do WaniKani right after waking up, and I kept it up for a whole year! Isn't that amazing? But I'm still only at level nineteen."

level 19, here I am!

Been using this site for the first time to complete Genki exercises. I get autocorrection, which is nice (not perfect), you get to do it on the go without carrying the book, and it helps with exercises that you'd normally need a colleague for.

No idea why my 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard configuration utility () repository has been increasing starts a bit faster lately. Actually quite surprised it has this "many" stars.

I'm glad, since I put it out there so that it could help someone else. But since I've published it and configured my own keyboard, it's been pretty much fire and forget.

(Theory: maybe people got keyboards for Christmas and found the repo as they started using the keyboard?)

"So, since the notebook was so new, I decided to brave the HP support chat and ask for help. Surely, those fine folk would be able to fix this thousand dollar laptop that is less than half a year old.

Well, turns out, no. They can’t. Their reason? Their reason was that I had installed Linux on the device, and since that is a sin, they can’t support it. Nothing to be said about how this couldn’t possibly be a Linux problem, since the damn thing won’t post. I got the run around for over an hour about how they were no longer responsible for the laptop because it no longer had Windows on it."

I was playing with and found out that (on my system) wc -c does not read the file contents to determine the number of bytes. It seems to just rely on the size reported by the filesystem.

If you run wc (which by default calculates newline, word and byte counts), that one actually actually reports the number of bytes read.

Since I'm messing with FUSE, the values can actually differ (metadata can say one thing, but reading can result in another).

An example where sizes differ:

$ wc -c test/main.rs
12994 test/main.rs
$ wc test/main.rs
50 287 12101 test/main.rs
