Really refreshing to hear a competent, serious young person in #PublicService, in contrast to the chaos often being wrought by incompetent and unserious "elders"

20.2.2025 07:53A small win, but a win non-the-less - #CapeTown Metrorail times showing up on Google Maps:...Was helping a colleague with some debugging yesterday, and realised that a lot of behaviours - working methodically through the code, checking basic assumptions, "working the problem" are soothing behaviours.
Which makes sense, as you're convincing yourself that everything is going to be OK, and you're going to figure it out.
I also suspect engineers have been doing this for thousands of years, way before we got enamoured with this whole scientific method thing.

Went pretty smoothly...Our bi-annual #GitLab upgrade had a bit more excitement than the last iteration. As always, the GL docs are great, and using the omnibus docker installation, the upgrade is extraordinary straightforward. There is now a fancy upgrade tool, with the version increments: https://gitlab-com.gitlab.io/support/toolbox/upgrade-path/?current=15.5.6&distro=docker
Alas, the docker version underneath was too old to go past v16. And we couldn't upgrade docker because, um, the OS (atomic host) has been deprecated for quite some time. I'm very good at computers

If I learnt one thing in the pandemic, we *really* struggle to appreciate the implications of exponential change
