My former science career peaked when I was once described as a “boffin” in the national press; my heritage career may have reached its zenith too with the latest Private Eye Nooks & Corners columns quoting AHF recommendations from an article I wrote last year about Scottish churches at risk!

We’ve been posting about cinemas on the internet since long before the dawn of the first tweet….

I do enjoy a bit of recursion.
Today I was at the Bo’ness Hippodrome, a building with a good claim to be Scotland’s oldest known purpose built cinema. Every time I give a talk there I get a photo of the same slide of the previous talk on screen. So this is now me presenting the Hippodrome on screen at the Hippodrome on screen at the Hippodrome on screen at the Hippodrome.
Inspired by a combination of receiving my copy of @mwichary Shift Happens, and the old tech backdrop that @chrisphin has, I’ve rooted around in my loft to create my own approximate classic tech that is meaningful or inspired me display in my newly reorganised office.
Imperial 200 portable typewriter, BBC Master 128, Macintosh SE, Apple eMate, iPod (with iPod Sock) & original iPhone.
Very excited to report my copy of #shifthappens has made it to Scotland in pristine condition - looks gorgeous. Can’t wait to get stuck into it @mwichary @glennf
Plus, it’s only thanks to the Gorton Perfected sampler I realised the signage souvenirs I took from my academic career when I left nearly 15 years ago are actually engraved Gorton! Always something new to learn 😀
Fun fact - tonight’s live #albaceilidh on @bbcalba is coming from the former Govan Town Hall - amazing B-listed building & the filming location of the interior of the Big Hub from @CBeebiesHQ show Mollie & Mack!
Turn over and watch it now for the best way to see in the new year…
Finally the day has come. After years of deliberately avoiding it, my 9 yr old daughter *asked to watch Doctor Who* after seeing Ncuti Gatwa on Newsround.
We watched the 2023 Christmas Special together and she loved it! She is now annoyed at having to wait till May to watch any more Ncuti, so I am trying her out gently with some earlier Who to keep her interest. First up was The Eleventh Hour - she loved Amy & the Matt Smith line about being a madman with a box.
So what should I show her next?
25 punters braved a damp December afternoon in the gathering gloom to explore the remains of the Glasgow Garden Festival 1988 with me and the rest of the After the Garden Festival team - Lex Lamb & Kenny Brophy.
Thanks to @dcrooks for the pics!
This guided walk sold out fast; don’t miss out on our next one: sign up to our mailing list on the website 👇

At the National Railway Museum in York today - always nice to spot a bit of unexpected Glasgow amongst the artefacts!

21.9.2023 20:41@siracusa Pleased to report that Hypercritical shirts have made it to Scotland. This article on the impact of the original Quatermass is excellent, but I especially loved this description of Doctor Who:
“Within John Higgs’ theory of ideaspace and memes the viral spread of writing, Doctor Who is a cultural parasite that uses imaginative children as a host, so the idea-organism can survive generation after generation, and ensure its own survival.”

Today I learned that WorldPay is still A Thing, that it has not changed dramatically since I first used it in circa 1998, and crucially, it remains awful and still doesn’t effing ever actually work to complete a payment.
I won’t name the UK wide charity that I was attempting to give money to via its online shop that is still using this historical aberration but I will note the copyright on the main payment page is dated over a decade ago…
Sigh.
Today’s Adventures In Architecture.

Anyone know if there are phone kiosks left in the wild that take them? 🤷♂️📞
Slightly concerned this TV advert appears to be selling our children a Junior version of Rover from The Prisoner. #BeSeeingYou
6.7.2023 07:35Slightly concerned this TV advert appears to be selling our children a Junior version of Rover from The Prisoner. #BeSeeingYouWell that’s exciting - less than 2 days since I got the digital version on my kindle, the real proper actual printed paper version of the awesome 50 Years of Text Games just got delivered! Looking forward to getting stuck into it.
If @aaronareed is keeping track of deliveries, I’m in Scotland 😄🏴
It appears I mostly use Apple TV as a mechanism to watch thematically linked programmes about misfit characters living underground in mysterious civilisations where nothing is first as it seems.

21 years since I gave him iPod- related technical support.
