17.12.2024 14:05Today we closed a 9 year old issue in Neovim https://github.com/neovim/neovim/issues/3681ijq is moving to Codeberg! If you are a packager of ijq for your distro, first of all, thank you! And second of all, be sure to update the upstream URL.
I will continue to mirror ijq to sourcehut for the foreseeable future to avoid breaking existing package scripts.

Their headquarters is about a 10 minute drive from my house.

Texas Instruments' decision not to promote Morris Chang to CEO is another one of those historical moments that seemed minor at the time, but ended up having dramatic outcomes. Had Chang been promoted he would not have left for TSMC, TSMC would likely not have become as dominant, and TI might have been a bigger player in logic chip fabrication.

Exponential increases in R&D and manufacturing costs for cutting edge node processes make consolidation all but inevitable. There are a lot of chip fabs that produce analog chips (or cheaper/lower performance chips) at higher node sizes (e.g. Texas Instruments, Global Foundries), but even Intel is struggling to keep up with the state of the art (which leaves only TSMC and Samsung)

Semiconductor manufacturing has always had geopolitical undertones (this is not a recent development). Even before TSMC, there was trade tension between the US and Japan through the 1980s.

I really enjoyed it, primarily for the history of semiconductor manufacturing, which I was a lot less familiar with than I realized. I can't speak to the accuracy of the narrative as it's the only history I've read so far. If anyone has recommendations for other books on this subject, please share them!
Main takeaways:

16.5.2024 13:35Neovim 0.10 was released today. I wrote about some of the highlights here: https://gpanders.com/blog/whats-new-in-neovim-0.10/After receiving a bug report that ijq was performing slowly, I spent a few days digging into it and coming up with a fix. I’m pretty satisfied with the results! https://gpanders.com/blog/making-ijq-fast/
To be clear, this is less “clever performance optimizations” and more “fixing an obviously bad prior implementation”. But still, gotta take the wins where you can get ‘em.
