Incidentally, the question I had to ask was one on the FAQ, but the FAQ only covered making the change I needed when the vehicle is first picked up. But I already have the car. It doesn’t say anything about making the change after the fact. Turns out it’s totally possible and I just need to go to any physical Hertz location to get it done.

Here’s what I don’t get about the “customers are only calling because they’re too stupid to look at our website” philosophy of customer service: nobody under the age of 40 *wants* to speak to a human. We’d rather get clear answers immediately on the website, but sometimes that isn’t possible. Sometimes the FAQ is incomplete, or what I need done is different than the standard flow and there’s no button for it. It comes down to one thing:

I wouldn’t be calling if there was any other way to solve my problem. Have the decency to not try to dark pattern me back to the website or repeatedly tell me how much faster the website could solve my problem. I already tried that from every possible angle. It didn’t work.

I don’t want to speak to a human. I have to.
