And we're also complicated machines that make nebulous decisions based on countless deterministic inputs. Chatgpt isn't sentient. But if someone wants to assert that some yet to be created ai isn't sentient, seems like we need a better claim about what makes humans distinct.

Just read a post arguing that humans are distinct from LLMs (correct) because ai is like a rube Goldberg machine / marionette that only appears to be acting independently because of its sophisticated construction and a human at the controls. I disagree about the why. It would be relatively straightforward to just leave an ai running without specific human input.

Saw that Musk tweet where he's like "I'm driving to Zuckerberg's house to fight him." Among other things, it's an illustration how displaying blue-check replies before anyone else warps the information landscape. When you go to look, instead of seeing "this is dumb and incorrect" it's all "great job sir!"

When explaining federation to people I use the email analogy, and often think how it's great that email is federated, but not great that the major, indispensable email providers are little kingdoms. I wouldn't be mad if something like social.coop got gmail size big. I want moderators, developers, designers and managers getting paid to maintain and improve the network. And then users still having a right to intervene if things go sideways, unlike the current dominant model.

Sometimes people promote going back to personal blogs/sites, saying small is good. It is. Still we shouldn't discount the value of big, democratically controlled entities. Size reduces transactional friction, increases diversity & allows for specialization. A dominant social network can have a breadth/depth of topics individually run servers can't. Successful operators have to deal with technical overhead & overcome barriers to discovery in addition to expressing whatever signal they're sharing.

At first I didn't like the trend of polls with "see results" as one of the choices. Because I thought it made the math of figuring out the percentage between the real answers hard. But I started liking it because of the meta information you gain of "no one cares enough to answer" or "the people reading this aren't the people you're trying to ask a question"
