Mastodon isn't great for photos. It works well enough for attaching an image (or a few) to a post, but it lacks most of the features that a dedicated photo sharing platform would have.

Fortunately, #Pixelfed is a dedicated photo sharing platform built around the open standards of the Fediverse. This means that people on Mastodon can follow your Pixelfed account.

Photo tips for Mastodon:

1) Add a text description for accessibility purposes. They work with screen readers.
2) If you think someone might not want to see it, because it's a scary spider or something, blur it with a content warning.
3) Minimize file sizes, because your server has to store them. I think the hard limit is 8 MB, but I've found 1280x960 pixel jpegs come in around 300-400 KB and look pretty good. Mastodon caps display size at 1,638,400 square pixels (1280x1280) in any case.

Started binge-watching #TheSandman on Netflix with Marcia yesterday. I haven't read the original comic book by @neilhimself, but it's high on my list now. The show is so good. Dark and moody, it's visually stunning and the musical score by David Buckley is wonderfully affective. The cast is fabulous, staring Tom Sturridge as a very emo (sometimes comically so) Dream and a stellar supporting cast including @stephenfry. I'm only dreading finishing the series, because I don't want it to be over.

On my way home from Durango today I nearly ran over a Great Basin gophersnake. It was crossing La Posta Road (how far south of town is it called that?) and as it was all stretched out I barely managed to straddle it with the truck's tires. I turned around and pulled over to get it off the road, and was relieved that I hadn't flattened either end. It told me that it was big and scary and definitely venomous (it's not). #snakes #herps
