Gallons of ink, at least — probably hogsheads — have been spilled analysing Robbie Robertson’s lyrics and their meaning. And every transcription I’ve ever found says that Crazy Chester told the narrator, “I will fix your rack if you’ll take Jack my dog” — which makes no sense, though many of those ink-spillers are at pains to explain what they think “fix your rack” supposedly means. Those explanations notwithstanding, why would the narrator respond “wait a minute, Chester, you know I’m a peaceful man” to an offer of help? Why would Chester come back with “That’s okay…” — apparently acquiescing to a bargain he himself initiated? Why would he need to chase someone into the fog to make a deal about a dog?

All these obscurities are resolved when we listen with the ears of 13-year-old me, who in 1969 and since heard: “I will fix you, rat, if you take Jack my dog.” Suddenly everything makes sense. The narrator has taken or is considering taking Jack the dog; Crazy Chester follows, catches, and threatens him; the narrator pleads; Chester relents. “That’s okay, boy. Won’t you feed him when you can?”

My theory: these are, or were, the original lyrics. They were either misheard by audiences (or colleagues?) and Robertson just went with it, or — in one of those moments of random twiddling that sometimes beset the mental thumbs of genius — he changed “rat” to “rack” and “you” to “you’ll” to add a layer of whimsical obscurity. Or something.
