Since #Amazon is killing off your ability to download books soon:
https://github.com/chrishol/greasemonkey-scripts/blob/main/download-all-kindle-books.js
Thankfully someone made a greasemonkey script to bulk download your files :)
It goes fairly slowly and page by page (~6m per 25) but that's still a HUGE savings for anyone with a lot.
Go forth and archive!

Highly recommended if you like Metroids. No combat, nearly zero text, heavily encourages "explore and try things" without being punishing about it and it is *super* well made. Go in blind if that sold you.
My first time through I couldn't figure out if I was sequence breaking or cheesing a mechanic or what, but nope. All intended, worked out perfectly. It's gonna take quite a while to figure it all out, despite easily being beatable in a few hours.

those files seem fine on the tooter's host though. is this something that should re-fetch implicitly sometimes and may be a bug, or does mastodon not re-fetch on attachment failures or something?

Apparently this is a known issue from ~2017 when you install from a USB. Sometimes. And Ubuntu's system updater considers "one of your repositories can't be loaded" to mean "no internet access" and doesn't even show the details in the log viewer, much less its own UI.
Literally every time I try, for decades, I hit some kind of self-corrupting nonsense in no time flat.
