If you speak Hungarian or want to experiment with AI translation, there's a thorough report in one of Hungary's leading online newspapers covering our recent Cambridge Journal of Economics article on #deindustrialization and the postsocialist #mortality crisis. Beyond the premature loss of 7 million people in Eastern Europe, the lived experience of #shocktherapy continues to influence people's political preferences until today. @publichealth @sociology Happy to send pdf. https://444.hu/2023/07/20/miert-haltak-bele-magyarok-ezrei-a-rendszervaltasba

In the Cambridge Journal of Economics, we present new evidence for the role of deindustrialization: http://bit.ly/3ncVOkD
We provide an explanation that centers on the lived experience of stress and despair rooted in upstream economic shocks. The bigger the shock, the bigger the stress, and the more people die. The better the social safety net, the fewer people die. @sociology @publichealth

There is a widespread perception that economics doesn't matter in explaining populism. To clarify this issue, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence of a causal association between economic insecurity and populism. All 36 studies report a significant causal association, which remains even after controlling for publication bias.

There is a fresh interview with me in 444, a Hungarian news portal, on why Orbán's #illiberal regime devalues #education and how he gets away with it. In a nutshell: Cheap and easily exploitable labor ensures the enrichment of the social coalition behind the government. Culture wars and #authoritarianism prevent the transformation of social frustration into a potent opposition. It's in Hungarian, but I'm happy to share the text if you want to access it but can't: https://444.hu/2022/12/21/orban-rendszere-megszilardult-jo-oktatast-ne-remeljunk-tole

The secret was revealed by analyzing the publicly available talk I gave as part of my NED fellowship, in which I showed how some liberal socioeconomic policies contributed to the weakness of #democracy, which Orban exploited to consolidate illiberalism. Absurd. Other scholars experienced even worse hate campaigns. State of democracy in Hungary, 2022.

We held the first small & productive interdisciplinary workshop as part of our research project with Dorottya Szikra (CEU), Alex Moise (EUI), & Francisco Panizza (LSE) on how #populist/#authoritarian governments responded to the #COVID crisis. Lots of interesting parallels (e.g., personalism) and some striking differences (not all populists are anti-science). To be continued. @sociology @politicalscience @publichealth

👉 I am currently a Marie Curie Fellow at Bocconi University. Previously, I was a post-doc at Cambridge, where I got my Ph.D.
👉 I am a sociologist/political economist studying how economic shocks get under our skin (#despair, #HealthInequalities) and what this portends for the future of #democracy (#populism) and #capitalism (mutation of #neoliberalism). In another life, I was a social organizer and green-left MP in Hungary.
