Me, trying to change the email in my profile on a website in this modern age
The field is greyed out, so I’m going to their support page
That’s a tiny form in the margin but ok, I write my request and submit
An interstitial comes up, asking me to review this entry in their FAQ in case it solves my request before I bother the humans, and I think great, I needed a tutorial for the edit button
But of course

on RaspberryOS (bookworm, freshly flashed)
I don’t even want it for myself, it’s just a dependency for a project who didn’t build it into their .deb

Didn’t know it would take that long, timed out
(2 hours)
Of course it didn’t resume, but started over although this time I used a tmux
session
Failed for a missing dependency that wasn’t identified early on

We’ll see…

Perhaps I should tag in French in that case

The month of January is single handedly keeping my emissions and my bill higher than I’d like for the entire year, but even so, I like the new trend
Of course the electricity graphs have a similar shape, though not as dramatic, and 2022-2023 were flat the entire time
Heat pumps work great, just don’t rely on the overall energy bill getting much lower

tl;dr Today I went from 250ms writing data every 6 second, to 800ms every 5 minute for the same data
After some reading of the SQLite docs, I changed my import method to a simple batch ETL script
I can’t load the data straight from CSV to the final table because not the same fields, and also I like the TAB character as a separator whereas SQLite doesn’t allow it, but I found a way that works well
It’s also really faster (no surprise there) compared to a programmatic method and loops, even with prepared statements
21.4.2025 18:27Never mind, since I’m using a CSV buffer I eventually realized that this data format usually translates well into SQL storage…tl;dr...I had the idea that writing to the SDCard for 250ms every few seconds was a bad idea
That is how long it took for SQLite to insert 1 row in 4 databases, roughly 80ms times 4
(I have four databases because the daily DB, the day before, the day after, and the huge all-time database)
So instead, I added a CSV buffer: incoming readings are appended to a flat file instead of immediately SQLite, and every 5 minutes, one of the nodes takes a hit to commit the CSV into the databases
The CSV append operation takes a few ms, usually 2ms but sometimes 5ms, so I'm happy about this part
The CSV to SQL operation takes about 8s when all 10 nodes are up (50 measurements to 4 databases), so that's a tad slower than I'd want but it happens once every 5 minutes so I guess that's ok?
(every SQL insert now takes about 40ms and there is probably still room for improvement)
And now I can keep a console with watch cat buffer.csv
which is great, and more readable than my server logs
Here is a sequence of four batches as a demo (first CSV field is a timestamp, second is the node ID, and the rest are air quality readings from the BME680)

Even being from the EU, it seems we aren’t protected from Meta opting us into its GenAI training by default
This is an email after the fact (they already started gathering data), the link to oppose is just one word in the body of this email, and it leads to a web form with a text area to explain our reasons for opposing 🤪
And from the language used, I’d surmise they reserve the right to deny our opposing this (or try to)

The idea would be to eventually trigger alerts when another house in the shared network is having an issue
Since in my case it would be for relatives who live relatively close to each other, I’d probably go with LoRa
But seeing that a dozen sensors produce daily databases that are nearly 3 MiB in size each (and I haven’t started storing events like connects and disconnects yet), I’m starting to have doubts
Thoughts?

The daily database files jumped to 2.6 MiB each since I started triple storing, as a lazy fix to my UTC issue
This is still much bigger than I’d like, but at least it’s a steady file size April 7 to April 18 included, so that’s good
And I can always reduce to 5 minute instead of every minute, or something
