If you need to wrangle with EEBO-TCP for your text analysis project, consider using the EarlyPrint project corpus. They've done a bunch of preprocessing to transform "the early English print record, from 1473 to the early 1700s, into a linguistically annotated and deeply searchable text archive." Documentation and tutorials are all really thorough. earlyprint.org/about/ humanitiesdata.com/resources/4 -tcp

Very excited to see so many folks switching fully over to or taking renewed interest in Mastodon! Like many, I switched over just a month or so ago, but I was already pretty much done with other social media platforms even before Elon's purchase of Twitter. What I like so far on M is the absence of ads/curatorial algorithm, as well as the vibe of conversation over broadcasting and engagement over trolling. I hope we can maintain and augment these aspects of the site.

Here's a question I keep thinking about. If you were making a sequel series in 2022 and were told Val Kilmer was off the table but you were nevertheless required to recast the role of Madmartigan with an actor of approximately Kilmer's age, physical characteristics, vibe, etc. so that he could more or less work as a Kilmer sub-in, who would be your top pick and why?

@andrewpiper Lastly, and unrelated to live-polling, planning things out to have smaller groups of students to serve as a panel or this week's respondents can be really powerful, the idea being to have everyone in the class be a part of the respondent group at least once per term.

@andrewpiper I'm still checking T occasionally but not posting there but, in response to your tweet re:active learning in a larger lecture setting, I have a couple thoughts. Live polling is a nice strategy that can add a lot to a big classroom experience, especially if you use a tool like Mentimeter that quant and qual responses. Some also have a feature to let students post their question and up/downvote them. I found Mentimeter easy to learn but you need to pay to get some of the features.

A colleague of mine in psychology recently shared with my the idea of "the troubling trio", characterized by: (1) low statistical power, (2) a surprising result, and (3) a p value only slightly less than 0.05. I hadn't heard this particular phrase before, so I'm sharing it. More people should know why the troubling trio is something to be troubled by, and should be on the lookout for this combination in their work. doi.org/10.1177/09567976156163 (by @dstephenlindsay)

There was an article a while back on the problems of trying to interpret a sophisticated model (maybe GAN, large language model, word embeddings, etc.) by feeding it things to predict on and then seeing how it behaves. I think the ideas was related to confirmation or selection bias. Anybody in etc. remember an article like this?

Folks in and are generally too distracted by the next shiny new thing (e.g., topic modeling, then word embeddings, then generative text models). We need a better ethos of deepening our knowledge of boring stuff (e.g., regression, natural experiments, reliability vs. validity), which can be radically transformative and informative if used well. DHers are not the only ones with this problem, but we've got it in spades.

Has anyone on here written/worked on a library that sits on top of in ? I'm imagining using the <doc> as a base class for a specific type of text, then adding generators and/or attributes in addition to everything that comes with a Spacy <doc>. How to do this is not straightforward to me because of how <doc> interacts with the <language> & the <vocab>; as well as <doc> instances being instantiated via a <language> instance.

Happy Thanksgiving! I wanted to share an example of a Trello API script that saves me some time every semester. Provided a board name, a list name, and an overall project due date, this script automates adding a set of tasks, descriptions, and task due dates to Trello. The example is the tasks I use when setting my syllabus each semester, so due dates are generated by planning backward from the first day of classes. gist.github.com/mjlavin80/4513

Before thanksgiving, my students wrapped up a computer vision project using CNNs to classify bird species (trying out various binary tasks and building a basic ensemble). If you want to do something similar, check out the CUB 200 and NABirds datasets at data.caltech.edu/records/65de6 and dl.allaboutbirds.org/nabirds. The latter is more comprehensive but a much bigger download!
