Guess I should cancel the “oh shit, it worked” coffee mug I was getting made for @bcantrill ‘s first day as Intel CEO. @ahl you might want to do a wellness check on him today or ask that he stays home.

Maybe Bryan does have a shot in the chair after all. Weirder things are happening in this timeline.

Wrote a new blog post on how to re-use my #sanoid #systemd service to do a #zfs snapshot for when I get ready to power down the laptop and want to do a backup from said snapshot instead of waiting on the timer #indieweb

Apologies to @ahl I might have given Bryan something to talk about on the podcast instead of the topic y’all decided on before pressing record.

For those who are unaware of the concept, it’s going down a stretch of road at sixty miles an hour with two windows down. I remember doing this in the trucks I drove in my youth when I lived an hour south of Atlanta. I would blare Toto out of the speakers. I am grateful for those memories.

Pretty sure I have been to Whackadoo Manor @mwl based on the locale description in The Delphi Taco story. However, being mostly normal at the time all I saw was the outside manor. No memories of the inside but pretty sure if I were to revisit today, then I would remember things that I will never be able to unsee. While I live a different life now, I am one of the cursed weekend shift IT Helpdesk workers. You think you leave only to find it stays there. A permanent part of you.

I made sure to assign blame to certain folks, granted they hold only 0.01% of it, the rest is on me. This as good as those sysadmin wings coming in @jimsalter
#indieweb #blog
In my misadventures of playing sysadmin, I made a change to the domain DNS for my own blog site I am setting up. I think @jimsalter would be pleased at my steps:
- Took screenshot of previous settings
- Placed screenshot + Wrote down my changes in backed up Obsidian vault
- Shared changes with my circle of homelab folks for feedback
- Implemented changes
- Had said council check that the changes worked
- Wrote down more info about why the previous configuration was + what about the new configuration accomplished in said vault
The SysAdmin ether sensed a distrubance and I got violently ill for two days. I assume this what @mwl means about the dark arts of sysadmining. I might be in trouble.
TIL what autotrepination meant thanks to @mwl . My brain went “context clues says it’s what you think it is but let’s go check because we need a new SAT word” and search revealed “yep and you might have nightmares about it”. Mild regrets to be had but the book is good for my darken IT soul.

I managed to crank out 600 words in the post. Sleeping on it but man it felt good.
@mwl @zzclaybourne is this what the muse does? “The first high is free but rest come at a cost, usually in dysfunctional payments”

18.12.2024 12:04For folks you use #syncthing is Möbus Sync the right choice for my Apple device?Feelings on a bad day
Some days just suck, today was one of those days. Nothing I did seemed right or moved too slow to be effective. The list would be too long of things that didn’t go right. I have to remind myself that bad days happen and it is okay to feel the hurt from those kind of days.
Hopefully if you are having a bad day like I did, you know it’s okay to feel it. I give you permission as a fellow person who had a bad day.

Today's completed task: adding more @mwl to my Calibre Library and conducting backups to areas I control
To make @jimsalter happy, I will be doing test restores tomorrow from both sites. Those books can wait until tomorrow, I think.
Today's one liner: zfs list -t snapshot -o name -s creation | tail -n 1 | sed 's/zpool\/home@//g'. This is to ensure I backup from the latest snapshot in my borg backup setup. Had to revamp the script after migrating to #sanoid developed by @jimsalter . Maybe now I can get my head around zfs replications then setup syncoid. Wait I got to do test restores from the backups. Derp.
