It kind of feels weird to be agreeing with Zak Kirkup's quotes in this article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-10/wa-election-2025-electoral-commissioner-calls-suspension/105032768
You can underfund the WA Electoral Commission or criticise how they ran the election, but it seems a bit on the nose to do both.
12.3.2025 06:14It kind of feels weird to be agreeing with Zak Kirkup's quotes in this article:...I went and voted earlier today. It's kind of interesting comparing voting in the CBD to voting in the suburbs.
The polling place hasn't been in the same location for any of the elections so far. This time it was two shops down from the Apple Store in a vacant shop. The floor was sticky because all the carpet and underlay had been ripped up. The walls were a mess, since all the fittings had been ripped out. No democracy sausages in sight.
The upper house ballot paper wasn't quite as bad as I feared. Only slightly wider than the booth. Labor's 37 candidates had been split into two columns, which kept it to a manageable size. I do kind of wonder how things will stabilise once parties are used to the new voting system.

One thing I noticed is that Labor has been suggesting different preferences for the upper house ballot in different parts of the state. This seems a bit weird given that it is a single state-wide race.
I spotted four variants: switching the order of Greens and Legalise Cannabis, crossed with including Animal Justice or not.
I'm kind of curious about what they were trying to achieve here.

Apparently one vote one value is unfair to the 20% of the state that used to elect 50% of the upper house.

I'm also noticing another oddity in the DLPs new name "Stop Pedophiles! Protect kiddies!".
As a party name it'd be reasonable to use title case, but they've left "kiddies" in uncapitalised. If they are instead using sentence case, why is "Pedophiles" capitalised? Do they think it is a proper noun?

There'll be 146 candidates on a ballot paper electing 37 seats, and > 25% of the candidates are Labor.

There is more information on the WAEC website here: https://www.elections.wa.gov.au
As the WA electoral roll draws from the federal roll, if your details are correct for the state election you should also be sorted for the federal election later this year.

I watched it last night: it was fun low brow humour on a small budget. Which I guess is about what you'd expect for something that ends up on Tubi.
It's worth checking out to learn a bit about a lesser known part of our nation's history.

It was really good, but I wish I'd known less about it going in. If you think you might even be a little interested in the film, I'd recommend staying away from the trailer.
I really don't understand studios that have so little faith in their films that they feel the need to give away large parts of the plot in a trailer. If the script treats something as a surprise, then maybe it shouldn't be in the trailer.

I'm kind of curious how big the Legislative Council ballot paper is going to be, given that we're moving from 6 regions electing 6 candidates each to 1 region electing 36 candidates.
For comparison, NSW elects half of their LC on a single ballot and ended up with 290 candidates for 21 seats at the last election. I wouldn't expect things to scale linearly, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few parties put forward a full slate of 36 candidates. Especially since the system is new.
