Unlike FOXP2, this gene mutated after our separation from Neanderthals, but before the dispersion of modern humans 😮

12.2.2025 17:26A possible implementation of Darwin's analogy between natural evolution and language...On Darwin Day, two of my favorite quotes. One about language and the other about languages. Pure inspiration.
- "Man has an instinctive tendency to speak, as we see in the babble of our young children, while no child has an instinctive tendency to bake, brew, or write"
- "The formation of different languages and of distinct species, and the proofs that both have been developed through a gradual process, are curiously the same"

Excellent summary by Ben Brubaker. My thought is that if Transformers learn English better than impossible languages, while earlier neural networks did not, perhaps it is because Transformers contain biases toward human grammar that derive from their original design for the specific task of generating English text.

I agree with Chris Collins: “I believe through his syntax textbooks he has probably done as much as any other individual to promote the scientific study of generative syntax in the world.”

A true giant of contemporary linguistics.
