"Garbage Time" in the Classroom

Over a decade as a teacher has taught me the importance of "garbage time" in the classroom. As a new teacher I would plan things within an inch of their lives. If I fell behind schedule, I felt I had failed as a teacher. If we got off track with an off-the-cuff personal conversation, I felt like I wasn't doing "bell-to-bell teaching" (I most certainly was), and so I tried to avoid it.

Later I learned that those impromptu, unplanned, personal moments were what my students remembered above all the vocabulary and grammar lessons they had dutifully sat through. That's how they remembered me as a teacher, and that's how they knew they were cared about. There were other results:

• As they became convinced I cared about them, their resiliency to try hard things improved.
• When they knew I trusted them, they trusted and respected me more and classroom management became easier. They felt like I was in their side.
• Impromptu, unscripted convos revealed valuable information about the students I would have learned in no other way.
• I also learned valuable information about the school culture as experienced by the students. More often than not, that turns into actionable information among the faculty and admin.

So now I actually work in garbage time to my lessons for the week. I don't know exactly when they'll come up or what form it will take, but I don't want to cream so many curricular activities into the lesson that there's nothing left for garbage time.
