What's under the tree this year? It's Debian Trixie ("testing") installed via a (patched) debian-installer netboot image on the MNT Reform open hardware laptop! Yes, this still requires a custom kernel and some quirks in user-space but instead of being upset that vanilla Debian doesn't work (yet) maybe this can make you feel motivated to help upstreaming the remaining few patches to Linux. Thank you and happy holidays, in case you are celebrating over the next couple of days. 🎄

This is in the language since C++98 and documented in https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/language/operator_alternative It also works in C if you `#include <iso646.h>`. The editors I tried have syntax highlighting for it as well. This blew my mind today. Sharing this here because I think that writing "and" and "or" is much, much more pretty and easier to read than && and || and maybe you also have never heard of this before.

This is a portable MP3 player with a big and loud speaker, playing songs from an SD-card by pushing one of nine colorful buttons. My daughter is a big fan of the Disney movie Frozen and I found a second-hand metal box into which the hörbert circuit board and speaker fit juuust barely. The result is now even more compact than the original. This project was made more easy because the manufacturer of hörbert releases some of their hardware schematics.

Anything with a closed-source ecosystem based on DRM or tracking is a no-go.
In search for a solution I stumbled across https://en.hoerbert.com/ which seems to tick all my boxes except that it's not open hardware and its ESP32 firmware is propr. as well. But they publish schematics as CC-BY and sell DIY kits. The Qt client is GPL on github and supports linux.
Other ideas? Boosts welcome!

Anything with a closed-source...Dear fedi-parents, do any of you maybe have any suggestion for a children's book (for a 3.5 year old) which shows them a non-heteronormative family in a natural, friendly and educative way? Despite our gay neighbors, our little-one insists that a family has to have a mother, father and child. Anything with an ISBN that can be bought in central europe is fine. Language can be either German, English or Spanish. Boosts welcome. Thank you!!
I know I'm late, but only recently I read https://gitea-open-letter.coding.social/ and today I finally migrated my gitea instance at gitlab.mister-muffin.de (the subdomain name tells you where I'm coming from) to #Forgejo. Luckily my gitea installation was still at v1.21 and thus migrating from gitea to forgejo was as simple as switching out the gitea binary for the forgejo binary. It was literally only that. Thank you @forgejo!

It is connected via bluetooth using the BT-600 adapter from http://handheldsci.com/kb/ and uses a USB power bank. The BT-600 apparently happily handles being connected to a USB-hub which has mouse and keyboard connected to it. The photos are taken with HDR so that it's possible to read the very bright screen of the BT-600.

It seems that one week at MiniDebConf Berlin 2024 made me loose around one kilogram of weight? Either a diet on Döner Kebab and Vita Cola is really strong or they are putting something in the drinking water over there. 😆
For anybody wanting to track their weight I can highly recommend `nom`. Entering your weight is as easy as running `nom weight XXX` in your terminal once per day and you get very pretty graphs. It also allows tracking calorie intake. https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/nom
