@davidbrin
Mr Brin, I'm looking for a book rec. I know you've thought about this. Spec history is not my area. Looking for alternate present day from alternate history:if the Confederate Project had prevailed and nation/city states had survived civil war, maintaining might=right, extreme property rights->slavery, debt servitude. Nat socialism maybe. Feudal/Oligarchs...
anything exploring what *present* might be. TV ver. of Man in High Castle was georgous but never seemed smart about that. Thx

MOTTO OF THE U.S. ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
Came across that in a #jonKabatZinn book on mediation.
Life is filled with things that seem difficult or impossible. Yet we overcome them so so so very often, as individuals and as groups. Yet we all go through life thinking the difficult has slowed us and the impossible has stopped us. When in fact, it's the slow and the impossible once dealt with, that makes our lives glorious.

... in these waters of clarity and of anguish
... humanity yearning to know itself
... sometimes even succeeding
... ultimately hugely generous... although hardly ever undertaken for that purpose
... Possibly... celebrating—who and what we are, and might become.

"Insist on yourself; never imitate.
Your own gift you can present every moment with the cumulative force of a whole life’s cultivation;
but of the adopted talent of another you have only an extemporaneous half possession.… Do that which is assigned to you, and you cannot hope too much or dare too much.
Found in #JonKabatZinn 's book #whereverYouGoThereYouAre
Which is proving t be an amazing read.

Quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn:
"Perhaps it would be good to realize, in the sense of “make real,” the full dimensionality of our analog genius as a species, before we lose it completely to our increasingly addictive digital precocity."

Wow.
"A recent analysis... from the end of 2019 to the end of 2023, the lowest-paid decile of workers saw their wages rise four times faster than middle-class... more than 10 times faster than the richest decile... Wage gains at the bottom... have erased a full third of the rise in wage inequality between the poorest and richest workers over the previous 40 years. This finding holds even when... “We haven’t seen a reduction in wage inequality like this since the 1940s”

Complaining
This bothered me enough to post, which sais a lot.
I really really really don't like that the georgous *Windows login screen* badgers me about gaming. I do real work on this machine, or at least try. It's just annoying. Not to mention that sneaky current events feed that shows up if I swipe from the left. It's garbage I can't ged rid off. Garbage MS is tossing at me to make money, by making me less ... Multiply that by 1.4 billion users, that's a awful lot of less-making. Argggg!

I just liked the headline. Sounds like the were just told they can't have a military or invade anyone. Not that they aren't already in half the kitchens already.

Moreover, I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
