It’s on again! @guardian Bird of the Year competition. Hopefully the stunning and endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo will get some attention - or even win! There are only 10,000 adults left due to loss of habitat. They’re smaller & less gregarious than red- or yellow-tailed black cockatoos so less like to receive the fanfare. #birdoftheyear

This is a devastating story. Survivors of Kinchela Aboriginal ‘home’ tell @guardian@press.co about their lives of brutality and cruelty as children. Standing in fresh cow poo to warm their feet brought me to tears.

If only I had more time to look around but we’re a bit busy monitoring the flooded Darling and Lachlan rivers…

This is an incredible find but Queensland is a huge state. Would love to know more about how it was initially found, by whom, and more rough detail on where? So, still have too many questions #dinosaurs

On that note (ethical dilemma of the day), which is worse? To RSVP ‘yes’ and not show up or not to RSVP at all? And does anyone ever RSVP ‘no’ and then show up?

“Divers for the [Great Barrier Reef tour] companies — all intimately acquainted with the reef and, like so many businesses, dependent on its vitality — scour the seafloor. There they collect broken pieces of coral and attach them to submerged frames on which the fragments can recover and grow. Ecologically minded tourists pay to see the unusual attraction.”

Okay @amyfallon - I've done this Mastodon thing but currently have zero idea what I'm doing. Why do I do this to myself? Why am I so curious and keen to try new things when I don't understand how they work? Okay, shall I hit 'publish' now and see what happens? Here goes! I'll add a pic of these white-cheeked eastern rosellas from yesterday for a spot of colour. #newbie
