Leftists always seem to think you can scare people into supporting leftism, but you cannot. Fear is the fundamental emotion of reaction/conservatism. People who are afraid will hold onto what is familiar and grasp tightly onto what they have.

If you want to build a communism, you have to start building social trust/cohesion so that people aren't afraid. There are no shortcuts to doing this.

Like if Wendy's is there, it feels legitimate, it feels like institutions have approved of it. It also feels like you are proximate to power. You can complain directly to Wendy's itself about how shitty their food is or whatever, and it feels like theres a chance they are seeing you. All of this is of course very silly, but ultimately I think that'd why people were on Twitter and that's why people are joining Threads.

Anyway I haven't had an account on any Meta owned anything in like a decade and I've never had a Twitter account so this really isn't my fight, but it's interesting because I do think it says something about the way brands annoy us but also ultimately comfort us under late capitalism

Not to get back on this horse, but when Europeans discuss the politics of their country in comparison to the United States and describe themselves as being "considerably farther left" than the United States, you should really clarify what you mean.

European moderate and conservative parties and voters are essentially equivalent to Democratic party voters, if not slightly more left-wing, when it comes to domestic economic policy. Universal Healthcare is a given But immigration policy is exactly reversed. European socialist and communist parties are way more racist and xenophobic than the average Democrat in the US.

I get tired of people claiming that the Overton window in Europe is so much farther left when like, yeah, in some ways, but also I listen to their socialist parties and am like "damn these people hate immigrants" which I am glad the Democratic Party knows it can't pull that shit without losing its voters
